Older Dodge Durango Owners Just Got A Reliability Lifeline, And They Could Get Refunds Too

The Dodge Durango is riding the wave of strong sales, partly driven by the availability of that sweet Hemi power at an accessible price. Third-quarter sales grew 18% year-over-year in 2026, marking the best Q3 results for the three-row SUV since 2005. And this piles on top of an exceptional 2025, which saw Durango sales surging by 37% to reach the highest volume in two decades.

It’s not all sunshine and rainbows, though, because some Durango models are having a bit of a taillight problem. And it’s not exactly a cheap fix, with owners having reportedly paid up to $2,000 out of their own pockets on repairs. In fact, the issue became so endemic that it sparked a class-action lawsuit against Stellantis back in 2023.

    The Durango’s Problematic Taillight Saga

The affected model-years range between 2018–2024, with taillights prone to burning out partially or, in some cases, even completely. And because driving around with malfunctioning taillights is obviously not okay, many owners found themselves having to pay a steep repair bill just to get back on the road. To no one’s surprise, this made a lot of people angry.

Water infiltration seems to be the main culprit here, as trapped moisture causes the electrical components inside to fail prematurely. The issue is extensively documented in owners’ complaints, and the automaker is at last doing something about it while stopping short of an outright recall. So, let’s see how Dodge plans to address this.

What Solution Is Dodge Offering Its Customers?

Warranty coverage will be extended to five years and unlimited mileage for affected vehicles, but this only applies to the taillight assembly specifically. This timeframe starts from the initial in-service date, and Durango owners outside that window are getting a six-month grace period to benefit from free repairs. But plenty of people have already paid to get it fixed themselves, so what’s in it for them?

According to the press release from Stellantis, said customers may be eligible for a reimbursement to cover their expenses. This can be requested by filling out an online form or the physical document included in their notification letters, and folks are encouraged to get in touch with Dodge customer support if they have any questions.

CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:

Despite the Durango’s recent commercial success, reliability has been a constant thorn in its side. And now is a crucial time for Dodge to address this in order for its full-size performance SUV to keep flourishing, or else a tainted reputation might cause it to lose momentum. This would clearly be a massive blunder for Dodge and its parent company.

So, it’s good to know that steps are being taken to iron things out – “driven by customer feedback,” as Stellantis would put it. That’s one way to refer to a class-action lawsuit, I suppose, but we’re happy to run with it as long as it gets the problem solved. And although this doesn’t mean the legal case against the company is settled, its recent effort to provide a solution will definitely serve it well in court.
