A survey conducted by BCAA found that while most British Columbia drivers understand the province’s Slow Down, Move Over law, many continue to witness motorists failing to follow it.

According to the survey, 88 per cent of drivers know what to do when approaching a roadside vehicle displaying flashing red, blue or yellow lights. However, 81 per cent said they have seen other motorists fail to slow down and move over when required.

The findings point to an ongoing safety concern for roadside assistance technicians, tow truck operators, first responders and road maintenance workers.

“What we need is for more people to put it into practice,” said Daniel Quigley, senior manager of Road Assist Fleet at BCAA. “When you see flashing red, blue or yellow lights ahead, slowing down and moving over when it’s safe to do so helps create a safer environment for roadside workers, emergency responders and the people they’re assisting.”

BCAA said it recently partnered with the RCMP for an enforcement and education campaign in Burnaby. During the two-hour initiative, officers issued 28 warning letters to drivers who failed to comply with the law.

The survey also found confusion remains about which vehicles are covered under the legislation. While 98 per cent of respondents knew the law applies to emergency vehicles, only 30 per cent correctly identified that it also applies to vehicles displaying flashing yellow lights, including tow trucks and roadside assistance vehicles.
