Insurance belongs in the buying budget when the shortlist includes a pickup and an SUV. Either vehicle may cost less to insure, even when their sale prices are much the same. The buyer needs a price for each exact model on the shortlist. Keeping the driver and policy details the same shows how the vehicle choice changes the insurance cost.

    Keeping the Quotes Consistent

For the first pair of quotes, the same insurer and start date keep the vehicle comparison useful. A pickup quote from one company and an SUV quote from another change 2 things at once. Comparing companies can help with shopping later, after the buyer knows how each prices the 2 vehicles.

The details used when calculating car insurance costs include who drives, where the vehicle is kept and how it is used. Those details belong in both quotes. Annual kilometres and the daily commute should match if either vehicle would do the same job.

Coverage needs the same care. Both quotes should have the same liability limit, accident benefits and vehicle-damage protection. A lower SUV quote doesn’t tell the buyer much if it leaves out collision coverage included in the pickup quote.

Raising a deductible shifts more of a covered loss to the owner and can lower the premium. Keeping deductibles the same shows the price of each vehicle without that change. The buyer can ask for another price with a higher deductible once the 2 vehicles have been compared.

    SUV
Model, year, trim, equipment and vehicle identification number
The same driver and policy details as the pickup quote

Why the Exact Pickup or SUV Matters

A basic used pickup and a new luxury SUV differ in age, value and equipment. Their insurance prices cannot show the effect of body style on its own. Even vehicles sharing a model name can have different trims and repair needs. A quote for the wrong trim can give the buyer a misleading budget.

The vehicle’s sale price is only part of the picture. Insurers also look at potential repair costs and claims patterns. A less expensive vehicle can still have costly parts or a theft history that affects its price to insure.

Canadian vehicle-loss information separates collision, comprehensive and other coverages. That helps explain why a model can look favourable for one kind of claim and less favourable for another. Comprehensive coverage includes theft, while collision concerns damage from a collision. One broad category average hides those differences.

US model-loss tables also distinguish how often claims happen from how much insurers pay when they do. Their methods adjust for factors such as driver age and deductibles. Those results describe insured losses, rather than an Ontario buyer’s premium. A major redesign can also make older results a poor guide to a newer vehicle with the same name.

Comparing Pickup and SUV Repair Costs

Repair costs depend on where the damage happens and what the manufacturer requires the shop to do. Safety equipment is part of that comparison for both vehicles.

    Cameras and Windshield Repairs

A camera behind the windshield may need calibration after glass is removed or replaced. Camera or sensor replacement can also trigger that work. The requirement depends on the vehicle and the manufacturer’s repair instructions.

Calibration checks that the equipment works as intended after the repair. A buyer comparing trims should therefore pay attention to their equipment. Features that help avoid a crash can add work when a damaged vehicle needs repairs.

A Pickup and SUV Repair Example

A 2023 US repair study compared scenarios involving a 2023 Ford F-150 and a 2023 Nissan Rogue, along with a sedan. The F-150 had the highest front and mirror repair costs in that sample. The Rogue had the highest rear and windshield costs.

The higher-cost vehicle changed with the damaged area. Those estimates aren’t Canadian insurance premiums, and they don’t predict a quote for another model year or trim. They do show why a general claim that pickups always cost more to repair is too broad.

Theft and Safety Need Separate Checks

Theft history matters at the model level. A buyer should ask whether either shortlisted vehicle carries a theft-related charge or an anti-theft requirement. The same question applies to pickups and SUVs. The answer should come from the insurer quoting that vehicle, since a general theft list cannot supply the buyer’s policy price.

A vehicle’s safety also has more than one side. Protecting people inside it is a different question from the risk it presents to pedestrians and other road users. A Toronto report published in April 2024 examined how large pickups and SUVs affect visibility and pedestrian risk through their size and front-end design.

That physical-risk discussion doesn’t provide a premium formula. A strong occupant-safety result, on its own, cannot establish which of 2 vehicles will be cheaper to insure.

    Price the Vehicle’s Actual Use

Sometimes the pickup and SUV wouldn’t do the same work. One may be intended for deliveries, while the other would be used for errands and a commute. Both quotes must describe the planned use accurately, including business driving. In that case, the buyer is comparing the cost of 2 different plans as well as 2 vehicles. The insurer can explain whether the proposed policy suits each use. A pickup label by itself doesn’t settle that question.

Adding Insurance to the Purchase Budget

A quote using each vehicle’s identification number gives the buyer a price for the car being sold. The year, model and trim should match the sale documents. The buyer also has to check what a loan or lease requires before choosing coverage.

Before signing the purchase agreement, the buyer should confirm the proposed start date and any remaining quote conditions. The yearly premium belongs in the car budget, with the payment terms and any charges for monthly instalments. Those costs give the buyer the insurance part of the budget for each pickup or SUV on the shortlist.
