The Jeep Wrangler Sells As Much As The Ford Bronco And Toyota Land Cruiser Combined, And We Don’t Know Why

The Jeep Wrangler has been a staple in the off-road community for longer than just about anything else. Jeep’s formula is based on one of the first off-roaders to see combat during the Second World War, and can be attributed to the beginning of the term “off-roading” as a whole. With all that history behind it, it’s no surprise the modern Wrangler we know today is still popular. However, we’re a little confused as to why the model is as popular as it is. Sure, it has a lengthy history, but there are other off-roaders, like the Toyota Land Cruiser and Ford Bronco, that can keep up with it. So, how on Earth has the Wrangler managed to sell nearly as many units as both rivals combined?

All specs come straight from the manufacturers. Pricing is correct at the time of writing, and excludes destination, options, taxes, incentives, and potential dealer fees. Automakers reserve the right to change prices at any time without notice.

Buyers Love Jeep More Than Anything, Apparently

Before we get into some specs, features, and other reasons why the Wrangler might be more popular than its rivals, we first need to discuss the sales figures themselves. According to sales reports from each automaker, the Wrangler sold nearly as many units as the Bronco and Land Cruiser combined. Jeep’s Q3 data shows 44,757 units sold in Q3 alone, pushing year-to-date sales to 131,011 units from January 1 through September 30.

Toyota’s Land Cruiser is the slowest seller with only 26,697 units sold year-to-date at the end of Q3, while Ford managed to move 114,956 units year-to-date by the end of Q3. When combined, that puts total Wrangler sales behind its two rivals by 10,642 units. That might sound like a lot, but keep in mind that it’s only a single model that managed to get so close to outselling its rivals, even when their numbers are combined.

Could Buyers Be Making Decisions On Price Alone?

Budget is typically the first decision any buyer makes. How much money do you have to spend on a car, or how much are you willing to take on as a loan? Well, the Land Cruiser loses in this case, since it’s so much more expensive than either other model. It’s only offered in two trim levels for the 2027 model year, including the base model Land Cruiser 1958 and the Land Cruiser (yes, it’s just called the Land Cruiser with no special trim title). The 1958 starts at $58,180 before destination and options, while the nicer trim costs at least $64,255.

The Bronco is a little better. Buyers can choose among seven trims (including the Raptor), with the base model starting at $41,295. Pricing still gets fairly expensive, since the Stroppe Edition, the highest trim before reaching the Raptor, costs at least $69,995, then the Raptor itself starts at $79,995.

Finally, we reach the Wrangler. The Sport trim in a two-door configuration starts at $36,035, while its four-door configuration costs $39,040. Of course, it gets just as expensive as the Bronco on the high end – the Willys 392 and MOAB 392 start at $69,995 and $79,995, respectively. Even though its highest trims are no less expensive than the Bronco’s priciest options, Jeep offers twelve trims in total, with lower prices and an even spread to choose from.

Plus, most trims let you choose between 2-door and 4-door configurations, while only two of the Bronco’s trims (the base model and the Badlands trim) offer the same customization. On that note, the Land Cruiser is four-door only, which may hurt its sales depending on the audience.

It’s Certainly Not About Reliability And Maintenance Costs

On the topic of money, it’s worth noting that a lower entry price doesn’t necessarily mean lower ownership costs. Using data from CarEdge, we can see the Land Cruiser will cost owners an average of $2,172 for maintenance and repairs over its first five years of service. The current generation uses a new powertrain that still needs to prove itself, though. Nevertheless, we’ll move on to the Bronco; the same source found that Bronco owners will likely spend $3,228 on maintenance and repairs over their first five years of ownership. That beats the Wrangler by a few hundred dollars, having an estimated cost of $3,505 for half a decade of service.

    Off-Road Capability Surely Ranks Highly

We’d like to think buyers choose these models for their off-road capability. There’s more about why that’s not really the case in the last section, but that doesn’t mean these aren’t some of the most capable off-roaders on the market today.

The Land Cruiser might be a fairly large model that’s not as practical on tight trails as a two-door Bronco or Wrangler, but it still comes with some great features. Both trims come with standard full-time four-wheel drive, rear and center locking differentials, and 7.9 inches of ground clearance. They also both feature crawl control and downhill assist control, while the higher trim comes with Multi-Terrain Select with drive modes including auto, dirt, sand, mud, rock, and deep snow.

Ford ships its base model Bronco with 8.3 inches of ground clearance, leading to better approach and departure angles for both the two-door and four-door variants. It’s equipped with part-time four-wheel drive, hill start assist, and those equipped with the standard manual transmission come with hill descent control. You’ll have to spend more money to get locking front and rear axles, but more standard features include removable doors, two front tow hooks and one rear hook, and more. The Raptor even comes with standard 37-inch tires and many other extreme upgrades.

Wranglers are pretty bare-bones at their most basic level. It comes with standard 32-inch tires and four-wheel drive, but the Sport trim lacks the advanced software and drive modes that come standard in both rivals. You get manual, single-zone air conditioning, cloth seats, and more basics to boot. However, 9.7 inches of ground clearance lets you climb over some large rocks. Moving up through the trims unlocks features like a 4:1 transfer case for maximum torque at low RPMs, 35-inch tires, two solid axles, locking differentials, and more.

Aftermarket Modification Takes It Even Further

One of the Wrangler’s biggest appeals is its aftermarket modification and customization scene. Even those who don’t actually drive off-road tend to enjoy Wranglers for their sense of community, expressed through lining their dashes with rubber ducks, installing new grilles with slanted covers over the headlights for an “angry” appearance, and other cosmetic changes.

That said, the biggest difference comes from just how capable Wranglers can be with the right aftermarket mods. While expensive, it’s relatively easy to lift a Wrangler several inches to fit 37-inch tires (or larger in some extreme cases), install winches (on those that don’t come with one from the factory already), beefier bumpers, running boards or rock sliders, and more. Most of that is possible on the Wrangler’s rivals, too, of course, but the Wrangler can get more extreme far easier.

Heritage And Lifestyle Do Some Heavy Lifting

Jeep Wranglers are extremely capable off-roaders, but do you really see 131,000 buyers in the last nine months actually hitting the trails every weekend? The reality is that most Wrangler buyers don’t actually buy them to drive off-road. For many buyers, they’re a status symbol, and others see it as a lifestyle image.

Even if they don’t find themselves climbing boulders, welding on rock sliders, or adding 40-inch tires, the idea of owning an SUV that can do it all makes the purchase worthwhile. Other drivers, their friends, and neighbors see them buy a new Wrangler and think, “that person must be a fit, outdoorsy type,” even if they only camp a couple of times per year.

None of this is to bash Wrangler owners – we appreciate that such a fun, capable vehicle is so popular among a sea of increasingly boring, blob-like unibody SUVs. Would we buy one? Probably not. This writer values Toyota’s reliability, lower maintenance costs, and slower depreciation over the Wrangler’s lifestyle image. Nevertheless, we seem to be in the minority when you consider just how many buyers chose a Jeep instead of its competition.
