The automotive world is full of rivalries. Ferrari versus Porsche, General Motors versus Ford, and even manual versus automatic. But one of the most contentious battles is being fought in Germany, between the powerhouses of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and BMW 3 Series. These two premium sedans are among the most recognizable in the world, but in 2027, they’re both reinventing themselves with new designs and a new ethos.
As both manufacturers shift to electric powertrains, their designs have become sleeker, but both remain committed to internal combustion for as long as they can. If you’re in the market for a compact premium sedan in 2027, you’re in luck, because these two old enemies are both strong options. Let’s do a side-by-side comparison of what we know.
One Familiar Design, One All-New Look

Out of these two cars, the BMW has grabbed more headlines thanks to an all-new look that ties into the Neue Klasse design language started with the iX3 SUV. This means there are lights integrated into the grille, a “2.5 box” shape that raises the rear cargo bay slightly, and thinner taillights. The entire car has a stance to make it look sporty. Some critics have found this look polarizing, so compared to the Mercedes-Benz, it truly sticks out more than other vehicles in the segment.
The 2027 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is much more subdued in its changes. The differences from the previous iteration mainly come from the front fascia, which now features a larger illuminated grille, larger air intakes on either side, and the three-pointed star motif in the lights. The rear also gets these lights. Mercedes says these changes give the sedan a ‘commanding presence’, but we’re just happy it has stayed with traditional door handles for this model for ease.

Mercedes doesn’t do as many light-performance models as BMW, meaning what you see is what you get with the Benz. There are a few AMG-Line choices, like a lip spoiler and red contrast stitching on sports seats, but the whole car is much more refined-looking than the BMW. The latter has the M350 trim that is adorned with quad exhausts, vents around the body, and special wheels to make it look like a performance car even without true M designation.
This shows where both companies stand. The Mercedes is traditional, sleek, and a bit glitzy with the stars and illuminated grille, while the BMW looks a bit sportier. Both come in new colors and large wheels, though the C-Class offers only 18- and 19-inch choices. The 3 Series comes standard with 19-inch rims, but buyers can also get a 20-inch size.
Screens Galore For The Modern Sedan Era

We’re used to screens in cars now, but the Germans saw this new trend and said: “We do it bigger.” That’s why both the C-Class and 3 Series are now adorned with displays, but the companies implement them in very different ways. Just like the exterior, the Mercedes tries to be modern with a large flowing display in the center that’s integrated with the lower part of the cabin, and there’s a digital set of dials in the gauge cluster.
The BMW opts for a radical shift in screen layout. The instruments now consist of a strip below the windscreen, and the driver can configure them in several ways. The choices include driving information, the weather, or even pictures of famous BMW vehicles. The central 18-inch infotainment screen controls many of the functions, and, when paired with the racy steering wheel in the M350, it feels sporty. Both cars have hundreds of settings buried in their screens, so we’ll have to figure out which is better to use when we test them.

To rival BMW’s panoramic display, the Mercedes-Benz has an augmented reality head-up display that can overlay navigation onto the real world (though the BMW can also be chosen with this). Mercedes also makes the cabin quieter with a new windshield seal and a different exhaust mount. The 15-speaker Burmester Surround Sound System can be directed specifically at passengers inside the cabin or customized to the occupants’ specification.
Like other Mercedes models, the C-Class has more ambient lighting than a nightclub. There are 64 color choices and a whole host of lighting zones. The BMW has a unique section of lighting in front of the passenger, though, and the optional sports seats have illuminated M logos on the headrests.
The Same Engines In Both, But Better

Both the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class continue into 2027 with the same engines as before, but both are slightly better thanks to small iterative changes. On the BMW side, that means the B48 four-cylinder and B58 six-cylinder remain. The former has the same 255 horsepower, but with tuning for better response times and a 5.9-second run to 60 mph. The B58 now makes 437 hp thanks to new turbochargers. Both engines are a lot more efficient.

Like Mercedes has been doing in its cars, the latest 3 Series comes with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. The system takes some of the strain off the engine and should translate to better gas mileage. It also uses a Miller combustion cycle.

The new C-Class might be the more interesting option, though. Its M254 Evo 2.0L turbo four-cylinder has the same stats as before at 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque but has new tuning. The tweaks include an electronic air compressor (similar to a supercharger) that delivers instant response while the turbocharger is spooling up. The mild hybrid system powers it and can provide an extra 27 hp for 20 seconds.
We haven’t heard anything about the AMG models of the latest C-Class, though, and those who want power on a budget might prefer the traditionally sporty BMW dynamics compared to the Mercedes. Both vehicles have reworked suspension for comfort and agility, especially in the BMW’s M350 trim.
All-Electric Options Are Available

With this new generation of premium compact sedan, both companies are offering electric versions of these cars. The BMW i3 looks virtually indistinguishable from the gas version. It has 468 miles of range, 463 horsepower, and a $61,500 price tag.
The Mercedes has a slightly more distinct look thanks to a fully lit grille and odd rear lights, but it has 482 horsepower and a 473-mile range (WLTP). Inside, Mercedes offers the C-Class electric with an incredibly large screen, so be sure to test drive to see if you can live with that.

Being 2027 model year cars, we expect these sedans to open up their configurators before the end of the year and to officially go on sale at the start of 2027. Mercedes-Benz hasn’t revealed the pricing of the latest C-Class, but we can expect it to start around the $50,000 mark. The current C-Class retails for $350 under that figure, so unless they can keep it at the same price, it may breach the $50k barrier.
The new BMW 3 Series starts at $49,900 for the 330, rising to $51,900 for the xDrive all-wheel-drive equipped model. The performance-oriented M350 has a base price of $65,900, which may be around the figure of the next-generation C 43 sedan from Mercedes. We’ll have to get our hands on these cars to see which one is the better buy in the flesh.
