BYD is testing “unprecedented disruptive technology” in its upcoming executive electric sedan, including coach doors and possibly solid-state EV batteries.

Yangwang is BYD’s highest-end, ultra-luxury brand, positioned above Denza at the pinnacle of the company’s lineup.

BYD uses the sub-brand to showcase its latest breakthrough technology. In the past, Yangwang vehicles have debuted new tech, including BYD’s quad-motor e4 platform, its second-generation Blade Batteries, and its 5-minute Flash Charging system.

For its next flagship model, BYD is preparing to push further into the elite category. Hu Xiaoqing, Yangwang’s general manager, offered a sneak peek at the flagship sedan for the first time about two weeks ago.

The upcoming executive sedan looked a bit like the Rolls-Royce Phantom, with a long wheelbase and boxy profile.

Ahead of its debut, a disguised prototype was spotted in China (via ThinkerCar), offering a closer look at the flagship sedan from nearly every angle.

Hu said the new model is “the culmination of three years of meticulous development by Yangwang, featuring the brand’s signature design language, and is an ultra-luxury executive sedan.”

The executive-class sedan is about 5.5 meters long, roughly the size of a Mercedes-Benz Maybach S-Class or Rolls-Royce Phantom.

BYD has yet to announce details, but the sedan was shown with rear-hinged coach doors, a first for one of its vehicles. It was also shown at one of BYD’s Flash Charging stations, indicating it will support megawatt fast charging.

According to local reports, Yangwang’s ultra-luxury EV will also be BYD’s first vehicle to use solid-state batteries.

Zheng Yu, Yangwang’s executive general manager, confirmed the new model will feature “unprecedented disruptive technology,” but didn’t offer any specifics.

BYD executive vice president Stella Li said during an interview with Carwow.es last month that the company’s first vehicle equipped with solid-state batteries will debut in 2027.

According to Li, BYD is “in the leading position” regarding solid-state battery tech and its commercialization, and will prove it next year.

BYD’s battery business, FinDreams, aims to begin producing sulfide-based all-solid-state batteries in 2027. It will initially be limited to small batches, as BYD scales up to mass production around 2030.

It hasn’t been confirmed, but if Yangwang’s sedan does come with solid-state batteries, it will likely be offered on higher-priced trims. Standard models could still use BYD’s latest Blade LFP batteries.

The sedan is also expected to ride on BYD’s quad-motor e4 platform, unlocking well over 1,000 horsepower.

BYD’s ultra-luxury sedan is expected to make its official debut this month, so we should learn more soon. Local reports suggest it could cost over 2 million yuan, or close to $300,000.

Yangwang’s current electric sedan, the U7, starts at 658,000 yuan ($98,000). The brand also sells the U8 (and U8L), a plug-in hybrid luxury off-road SUV, and the U9, a fully electric super-coupe.
