Collector cars don’t usually reveal their hand this early. Conventional wisdom holds that a performance model needs at least two decades of age before values begin their serious climb — yet the 2016 Porsche Cayman GT4 is already tearing up that rulebook. Limited in number, purpose-built for the track, and carrying the distinction of being the first Cayman ever developed by Porsche’s legendary GT department, it has quietly become one of the most compelling appreciating assets in the modern sports car market.

For anyone hunting a car that combines genuine driving thrills with genuine investment potential, the Cayman GT4 deserves a very close look.

The Cayman GT4 Was The First Of Its Kind To Be Developed By Porsche’s GT Department

The Porsche Cayman first appeared in 2005 as essentially a more powerful and hardtop version of the 987 generation Porsche Boxster, the model slotting in neatly between the Boxster and the range-topping 911 sports car in the German performance brand’s line-up. For much of the Cayman’s early years, it was only available in the staple base and S variants, with little in the way of special editions. The first of these came in 2009, when the stripped-out and more powerful Cayman R was introduced.

Even so, the nameplate was left well alone by Porsche’s GT department, which remained focused on developing faster and more commanding versions of the 911, such as the GT2 and GT3. A decade after the Cayman first appeared on the marketplace, that all changed. As a send-off for the second-gen 981 Cayman, Porsche tasked its GT team with cooking up a special, more track-focused version of the car before the third-gen model arrived for the 2017 model year. The squad duly obliged, and the Cayman GT4 was the result.

The GT4 Was Built To Slay The World’s Most Demanding Tracks

The Cayman GT4 was envisioned as the most powerful and capable example of the breed ever to emerge from Stuttgart. This was achieved by fitting a detuned Porsche flat-six engine borrowed from the 911 GT3, stripping out every pound of weight that could be saved, applying a downforce-boosting aero kit, and bringing upgraded suspension and braking systems to the party.

The Cayman GT4 Didn’t Come Cheap

The Cayman GT4 was a pure-blooded Porsche GT car and, as a result, carried a hefty price tag. While the standard Cayman was offered for a little over $52,000 at the time of its launch, a GT4 demanded $84,600. Part of the reason for the premium was the vehicle’s substantially enhanced performance over the lower-end variants, but another key factor was just how rare it was set to be. As a celebration of the outgoing Cayman generation, Porsche decided to make the GT4 a limited-run proposition.

While final production numbers were never officially confirmed by Porsche, it’s thought that only around 2,500 examples were ever built.

The Cayman GT4 Is Already Worth More Now Than When It Was New

The Porsche Cayman GT4 platform has achieved blue-chip status, split clearly across two distinct eras. The original 981 generation (2015–2016)—powered by a 3.8-liter flat-six mated exclusively to a six-speed manual—carried an original base MSRP around $84,600. Today, well-kept, average-mileage 981s consistently trade between $95,000 and $110,000, with pristine, low-mileage examples pushing past $115,000 to $125,000+.

The subsequent 718 Cayman GT4 (2020–2023) introduced a custom 4.0-liter engine and an optional PDK transmission. Base models originally stickered around $100,000, but high-option 718s currently hold firm between $115,000 and $140,000 on the used market. Ultra-low-mileage or PTS (Paint-to-Sample) builds regularly surpass $150,000.

With Porsche pivoting its mid-engine lineup toward electrification, both generations have established a firm value floor. The GT4 isn’t just a track-day scalpel—it’s an appreciating asset that defies standard luxury sports car depreciation.

There Is A Good Chance The Cayman GT4 Will Become Even More Valuable

Considering the Cayman GT4 is far from a classic — it’s only ten years old as of 2026 — there is tremendous scope for its value to keep climbing. Its already-rising prices point strongly in that direction, driven by the model’s exclusivity and historical significance as the first Cayman to receive the Porsche GT Department treatment. Its track-focused nature further bolsters its collectability, with the more extreme and bespoke performance upgrades allowing it to stand clearly apart from every other Cayman of the same vintage.

The Cayman GT4 Offers Much For Driving Enthusiasts

Even if profit isn’t the goal, the Cayman GT4 is the most commanding version of the 981 Cayman ever constructed. The 3.8-liter naturally aspirated flat-six pumps out 385 hp to the rear wheels via an engaging six-speed manual transmission — more than 70 hp above what even the 3.4-liter Cayman S could muster. The enlarged powerplant was detuned slightly compared to the unit used in the 911 GT3, primarily to preserve that car’s pace advantage over its smaller sibling. Porsche’s GT team also put the car on a strict diet, with its 2,955-pound curb weight coming in roughly on par with the standard Cayman manual — impressive given the GT4’s considerably larger engine and all that additional bodywork.

Speaking of which, the front splitter, rear diffuser, and rear spoiler all work together to generate a meaningful amount of downforce, providing extra grip and stability at high speed. To further sharpen the Cayman GT4’s cornering ability, it was equipped with Porsche’s Active Suspension Management system, which includes an adaptive damping setup that allows the car to optimally handle any road surface it encounters. The GT4 was also fitted with an upgraded limited-slip differential incorporating Porsche’s torque vectoring technology, helping keep the nose tucked neatly toward the apex mid-corner. Rounding out the package, the Cayman GT4 features an enhanced braking setup with six-piston aluminum calipers up front and four-piston units at the rear, with large ventilated discs kept cool by the specially developed aero package.

The GT4 was truly the definitive 981 Cayman — both from a performance and a rarity standpoint — so it’s not difficult to see why values for this special model are only heading in one direction, and will continue to do so in the years ahead.
