Subaru is giving performance fans something new to look forward to with a pair of limited-edition 2027 models based on the BRZ sports car and WRX performance sedan. The automaker has offered only a small glimpse of what is coming so far, but it has already confirmed that both models will be limited-production, enthusiast-focused offerings. That alone should get the attention of Subaru fans who have been waiting to see the company put a little more energy into its performance lineup.
The single teaser image released by Subaru strongly suggests that the special models will build on the existing tS versions of the BRZ and WRX. In the case of the WRX, the photo shows a large carbon-fiber rear wing that gives the sedan a noticeably more aggressive appearance. There is no indication yet that either car will receive more power, so expectations for a revived WRX STI should probably remain in check. Still, Subaru could have plenty of room to make these cars more interesting through suspension tuning, brakes, aerodynamics, tires, weight reduction, or other chassis-focused upgrades.
That approach would fit both cars well. The current WRX tS already pairs its 271-horsepower turbocharged 2.4-liter Boxer engine with performance hardware that includes STI-tuned electronically controlled dampers and Brembo brakes. The BRZ tS takes a similar enthusiast-first approach, using its naturally aspirated 228-horsepower 2.4-liter Boxer engine with rear-wheel drive, an STI-tuned suspension, and upgraded braking hardware. Neither car necessarily needs a huge horsepower increase to become more entertaining if Subaru concentrates on sharpening the parts drivers interact with most.
We will not have to wait long to see exactly what Subaru has planned. Both limited-edition 2027 models are scheduled to make their full debut at Boxerfest at the York Fairgrounds in York, Pennsylvania, on September 27, 2026. With Subaru calling these new versions enthusiast-focused from the start, there is good reason to expect something more interesting than a simple appearance package, even if the long-awaited return of the WRX STI remains off the table for now.
