Acura is preparing to say goodbye to one of the more interesting performance SUVs in its lineup. Production of the MDX Type S will pause after the 2026 model year, leaving the regular MDX to carry on without its turbocharged performance flagship. The decision adds another notable change to Acura’s product portfolio following the end of the TLX sedan, the ZDX electric SUV, and the pause in production of the manual-transmission Integra. For enthusiasts who have appreciated Acura’s recent push toward more distinctive performance models, the disappearance of the MDX Type S will certainly be noticed.
The MDX Type S has stood apart from the rest of the MDX family thanks largely to its 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 producing 355 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque. That engine is paired with Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system and a sport-tuned 10-speed automatic transmission, while hardware such as adaptive air suspension, Brembo front brakes, and unique Type S styling helps give the SUV considerably more personality than the standard model. By comparison, the rest of the MDX lineup relies on a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 producing 290 horsepower. The Type S has effectively served as the performance halo for Acura’s three-row SUV since the current-generation MDX arrived.
The reasoning behind the production pause appears to be tied at least partly to uncertainty surrounding upcoming U.S. emissions regulations scheduled to take effect for 2027. The turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 is particularly notable because Acura does not currently use that engine elsewhere in its lineup, potentially making the business case for keeping it certified more complicated. Acura has not revealed a full breakdown of its decision, but the automaker has confirmed that the Type S will step away after 2026 while the regular MDX remains very much alive.
There could be an interesting consolation prize for future MDX buyers. Acura says some of the Type S model’s features and styling will make their way into the broader MDX lineup, suggesting the 2027 model could borrow at least some of the sharper appearance and premium equipment that helped distinguish the Type S. Exactly what carries over remains unknown. It would be particularly interesting to see whether items such as the Type S-inspired exterior details, upgraded interior treatments, braking hardware, or suspension technology eventually become available on other trims. Acura says additional information about the 2027 MDX will be released later.
For buyers who specifically want the full MDX Type S experience, the 2026 model year now represents the end of the road, at least for the foreseeable future. Acura currently lists the 2026 MDX Type S Advance starting at $75,850, and dealer inventory should remain available for some time after production winds down. Still, the Type S has occupied an unusual sweet spot by combining three-row practicality, legitimate performance hardware, and a level of exclusivity not found in the standard MDX. Its departure will leave a noticeable opening at the top of Acura’s SUV range, making the upcoming 2027 MDX even more important as Acura figures out how much of that Type S character can survive without the badge or its turbocharged V6.
