The Canadian Automotive Partnership Council (CAPC) met in Toronto on Sept. 9 to discuss the impact of U.S. tariffs on Canada’s automotive industry and the actions needed to support long‑term competitiveness. The meeting included federal industry minister Mélanie Joly and Ontario economic development minister Victor Fedeli, and was chaired by Honda Canada president and CEO Dave Jamieson.
“Today’s discussion reinforced the significant challenges facing Canada’s automotive industry as a result of ongoing trade uncertainty and U.S. tariffs,” said CAPC chair Rob Wildeboer. “Industry is committed to working closely with governments to address immediate pressures while maintaining a focus on long‑term competitiveness.”
Members said restoring certainty for manufacturers and suppliers is essential as companies make long‑term production and investment decisions. The discussion also focused on supporting automotive investment, maintaining a skilled workforce and assisting businesses affected by tariffs.
“In the face of unjustified and illegal U.S. tariffs, Ontario will continue to stand up for our world‑class auto industry,” said Victor Fedeli. “Our $30 billion tariff relief plan is providing the support needed to protect jobs and strengthen our economy.”
CAPC said a competitive Canadian automotive industry depends on stable U.S. trade relations, strong domestic investment conditions and continued cooperation between governments and industry. The council will continue engaging with governments on measures to address tariff pressures.
“The Government of Canada’s commitment to Canadian workers, businesses and the long‑term strength of our economy does not waver,” said minister of industry Mélanie Joly. “Canada has already taken action through the Automotive Strategy launched in February 2026.”
CAPC’s membership includes the CEOs of Canada’s five automotive assemblers, major parts suppliers and battery manufacturers, along with representatives from labour, academia, aftermarket organizations and dealer associations.
