Tesla brings Cybercab to China, rules out sale and robotaxi service

Tesla is putting its Cybercab on public display in China this week, but the company wants to be clear about one thing it isn’t: a vehicle it plans to sell there.

Tesla China said the showcase “does not involve” selling the Cybercab in the Chinese market or launching a driverless ride-hailing service — even as China’s own robotaxi operators run paid rides at scale.

The static displays open September 17. The Cybercab will sit in Tesla’s Huamao experience store in Beijing through September 27, and in the LG1 north hall of HKRI Taikoo Hui in Shanghai through September 21. It’s the car’s first public appearance in the country.

    “Product design and technological concepts”

In a statement first issued this week, Tesla China framed the tour as a look, not a launch. The event is meant “to showcase its product design and technological concepts,” the company said, and “does not involve the sale of the Cybercab in the Chinese market or any arrangement for driverless ride-hailing commercial operations.”

Look, don’t touch. That’s about as flat a disclaimer as Tesla gets, and there are good reasons for it.

The Cybercab has no steering wheel and no pedals. We got our first close look at its non-existent steering setup earlier this month, and a two-seat car with no manual controls can’t be registered and sold to consumers in China any more than it can in the US. So a Chinese buyer walking into the Huamao store can look at it, but there’s nothing to order.

The robotaxi side is even harder. Tesla only rolled out a limited, supervised version of Full Self-Driving in China in early 2025, and it still doesn’t have the approvals to run an unsupervised, driverless service there.

    Electrek’s Take

While Tesla parks a static Cybercab in two malls, Chinese companies are running commercial driverless rides in multiple cities right now.

Baidu’s Apollo Go, Pony.ai, and WeRide all operate paid, no-safety-driver robotaxi services across Chinese cities, and they’ve been scaling for years. It’s the most developed driverless market on the planet, and Tesla is showing up with a car it can neither sell nor operate there.

This feels more like a way to get some curious people into showrooms to try to sell them a Model Y than anything concrete about launching the steering-wheel-less vehicle in China.

In the US, Tesla is managing to get around regulations nicely by focusing on deregulated markets in Texas and Florida, but it’s nowhere near ready for deployment at scale and real regulations, which are already in place in China.

If you’re weighing an EV, powering it at home with your own solar is the closest thing there is to free fuel. With electricity rates up almost 10% last year and expected to keep climbing, going solar is one of the best ways to protect yourself against rising costs. And with lease and PPA options, you can do it with zero upfront cost and start saving immediately. If you want to find the best deal, check out EnergySage. It’s a free service with hundreds of pre-vetted installers competing for your business, so you save 20 to 30% compared to going it alone. No sales calls until you pick an installer.
