When people think of legendary truck reliability, Toyota usually gets the first mention — and for good reason. The brand consistently dominates vehicle dependability studies, with the Toyota Tundra and Tacoma regularly claiming top spots in their respective segments in JD Power Vehicle Dependability rankings. But the truck that has racked up the most miles of any pickup on record? It wears a Dodge badge.

Several automakers and engine manufacturers — Toyota, Ford, and Cummins among them — run high-mileage clubs where owners share their stories. In those communities, half-million-mile trucks are practically common. A surprising number of vehicles have cracked the million-mile mark, too.

But how about a truck that has completed 2.6 million miles? To be specific, 2,687,028 miles at the last count. Must be a Toyota of sorts, right?

    Nope. It’s actually a Dodge. A Dodge Ram 3500.

There are literally millions of trucks running around the world. Some of the proud owners of those trucks like to share their accomplishments, like adding a sticker proclaiming the impressive mileage reached. Other drivers couldn’t care less about sharing such feats. So, although we are quoting some numbers here, there may very well be some trucks running around with even more miles.

    The High-Mile Club

1.6 million miles. That’s how far Mike Neal drove his 2008 Toyota Tacoma. Neal covered more than 400 highway miles per day delivering medical supplies across several states. The truck had an engine and gearbox replacement at around 800,000 miles.

After Neal passed away, the ‘most famous Tacoma in the world’ ended up on the same dealership floor where Mike had bought it back in 2008, enjoying its retirement after all those miles.

There is also the case of Victor Sheppard, who drove his 2007 Toyota Tundra for more than 1 million miles. Toyota rewarded Sheppard with a brand-new Tundra in exchange for his high miler, an offer he gratefully accepted.

Mark Miller bought his Toyota Highlander Hybrid in 2006 and put more than 1 million miles on it, using the SUV as his mobile office and towing trailers for his asphalt paving business. Miller says maintenance was a top priority, so he had the Highlander serviced regularly at Germain Toyota of Naples.

In 2022, fate came knocking on Miller’s door… Hurricane Ian hit Florida and the resulting storm surge destroyed the Toyota. Then he got a call from the dealership… he needed to come into the shop. He arrived to find a brand-new Toyota Highlander Hybrid waiting for him.

    Nice.

When you want to talk high mileage — like really high mileage — consider Howard Clayton’s Dodge Ram 3500, with more than 2.6 million miles on the clock. It still has the original engine (which received a rebuild along the way), and the six-speed gearbox was eventually replaced.

Clayton is an owner-operator who has delivered RV trailers across the USA and Canada for more than two decades. He bought the Ram 3500 new, fitted high-performance injectors, and added an aftermarket ECU performance chip that pushed output to more than 300 hp.

The Dodge’s service manual calls for the legendary Cummins 5.9-liter Inline-6 direct-injection diesel to be serviced every 3,000 miles, but Clayton told Farm Show magazine that he actually changes the oil and filter every 10,000 miles.

That’s because he travels up to 700 miles per day, and at the 3,000-mile interval he would need to visit his regular mechanic, Forest Cunningham, roughly every four days — not a practical solution.

Cunningham told Farm Show that Clayton is a meticulous owner and a responsible driver. If anything is amiss — even a minor thing — Clayton has Cunningham address it before a small issue can become a big one.

At 1.7 million miles, the engine’s head gasket gave up the ghost, and there had been a few small oil leaks over the years that needed mending — but other than that, no major issues were reported. The battery, alternator, and lift pumps were also replaced at various points.

At around 2 million miles, the engine was comprehensively overhauled, including new pistons, bearings, and crank. The six-speed gearbox was also replaced. Interestingly, the most persistently troublesome component turned out to be the instrument panel, which required multiple replacements over the years.

Clayton had the interior lightly modified for long-distance driving, replacing the passenger seat with a bed so he could catch a comfortable nap when needed.

So what’s the secret to the Cummins engine’s longevity? Mechanic Cunningham explained to Farm Show that he drains all the fluids and refills with fresh synthetics. Clayton is also very particular about the oils and additives he uses throughout the drivetrain.

Clayton uses synthetic products for both the engine and gearbox, and adds a measure of Lucas Oil Additive to the engine at every oil change. This, he told Farm Show, thickens the oil for better oil pressure.

Another key addition is a fuel treatment product to keep the engine’s injectors clean.

Farm Show followed up with Clayton, and by then the 76-year-old professional driver had covered 2.6 million miles in his Dodge Ram 3500. He also noted that he had started easing back on the driving, taking more time off — logging ‘only’ 200,000 miles over a recent two-year stretch.

Clayton reported that the truck was still returning around 13 miles per gallon with an RV trailer up to 44 feet long in tow, and about 20 MPG running empty.

We hope Howard Clayton is still chasing the horizon in his Dodge Ram 3500.

    The Story Of That 5.9

    • The original Cummins B-Series 12-valve had 160 hp and 400 lb-ft – modest by today’s standards, but packing quite the punch in 1989. Clayton’s Ram 3500 was fitted with the later and more powerful 24-valve of this engine.Cummins

The Cummins B-Series Inline-6 turbocharged diesel engine arrived in the Ram pickup lineup in 1989. That original single-turbo, 12-valve 6BT produced 160 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque — genuinely impressive numbers for the era.

As the horsepower and torque wars intensified in the pickup segment, the engine received a steady stream of upgrades. By the time Howard Clayton bought his Ram 3500, the 5.9-liter unit had evolved into the ISB5.9, featuring four valves per cylinder and full electronic engine management. In that form it was rated from 215 hp to 325 hp depending on tune.

The engine was paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox, which reportedly had some issues, including fluid leaks, harsh or delayed shifting, torque converter troubles, and solenoid and sensor malfunctions. So Clayton did really well with his Ram’s original gearbox, obviously taking great care when hauling heavy loads.

The ISB5.9 served in the Ram lineup until January 2007, when it was replaced by the Cummins 6.7-liter Inline-6 — a 13% increase in displacement — offering improved power output and compliance with tightening emissions regulations.

2.6-Mllion Miles? That Must Be Like A World Record?

It may very well be the highest officially recorded mileage for a dual-wheel heavy-duty truck, but the official record for the highest recorded mileage for any vehicle is held by Irv Gordon’s 1966 Volvo P1800 — a staggering 3.2 million miles accumulated since new.

That works out to roughly 55,172 miles per year… lots of fun in the sporty Volvo.

Maintenance: Servicing your car on a regular basis is the foundation of a longer lifespan. Follow the manufacturer’s recommended service schedule where possible, or find a sensible alternative (as Clayton did). At minimum, that means regular oil and filter changes.

Don’t go cheap on parts: Buying a set of spark plugs that fell off the back of a truck or opting for the cheapest oil you can find may save you a few dollars in the short term, but it can easily come back to bite you later.

Cutting corners on parts will only hurt engine performance, efficiency, and reliability — and ultimately shorten the vehicle’s life. Simply put, you wouldn’t go to your dentist for open-heart surgery — stick with the right stuff as best you can, and your engine (and your wallet) will thank you in the long run.

Don’t ignore strange sounds and symptoms: If a warning light illuminates on the dashboard, resist the urge to cover it with duct tape and carry on. Get it checked. It could be something minor, or it could be a more serious issue that leaves you stranded on the side of the road. Likewise, if you hit the brakes and hear a grinding noise, that’s not a problem you can solve by pressing the pedal more gently — worn brake pads need to be replaced, full stop.

Drive it properly: If you race every car from the traffic lights, pin the engine against the rev limiter in every gear, and then brake hard for the next red, your vehicle’s longevity will suffer for it.

That said, driving like Miss Daisy and short-shifting a manual so the engine never sees above 1,500 rpm isn’t recommended either. Just drive normally.

Interestingly, all the truly high-mileage vehicles spend the vast majority of those miles on the open road at a steady, constant speed. Good excuse to plan a road trip, that.
