MINI is digging back into its performance-inspired history with the new 2027 MINI 1998 GT Edition, a limited-production special based on the Cooper C 2 Door. The latest model is the sixth entry in MINI USA’s ongoing Icon Drops campaign, and its mission is pretty straightforward. Take one of the brand’s more attainable models, give it some motorsport-flavored attitude, and connect it to the same GT lineage that produced cars like the classic Mini 1275 GT and later MINI 1499 GT.
The name may sound like a reference to the late 1990s, but the “1998” designation actually points to the car’s 1,998cc turbocharged engine. MINI has not transformed the Cooper C into a full John Cooper Works performance model, but it has dressed the car with enough JCW hardware to give it a noticeably sharper look. Midnight Black Metallic paint is contrasted by bold orange lower-body graphics with “1998 GT” lettering, while additional GT badging and coordinated orange accents help distinguish the car from a standard Cooper.
The exterior treatment also includes 17-inch John Cooper Works Sprint Spoke wheels finished in black and a JCW aero kit in Gloss Black. Together, those pieces give the 1998 GT Edition a more aggressive stance without straying too far from the simple proportions that have defined the modern MINI Cooper. That approach fits the history MINI is referencing here, since the original 1275 GT was remembered as a sportier take on the classic Mini rather than an entirely different kind of car.
Inside, MINI continues the GT theme with John Cooper Works Sport Seats upholstered in Black Vescin with Black Knit material. A heated three-spoke JCW steering wheel gets unique GT badging, while special door sills, floor mats, a key fob cover, steering-wheel insert, and center-console storage box lid add smaller touches throughout the cabin. None of these changes fundamentally alter the Cooper’s interior, but taken together they give the 1998 GT a more personalized feel than a simple appearance package.
The car also serves as the latest chapter in MINI USA’s Icon Drops campaign, which borrows some of its release strategy from sneaker culture. Rather than introducing all of its special editions at once, MINI is revealing them individually throughout the year with limited availability and separate launch moments. Previous releases have included the Cooper S 1965 Victory Edition, Red Line Edition, Paul Smith Editions, Cooper Heritage Edition, and Rooftop Editions. The 1998 GT becomes number six out of eight planned U.S. special editions for 2026.
Pricing starts with the 2027 MINI Cooper C 2 Door at $29,500 before destination, but the complete 1998 GT Edition comes to $36,875 before the $1,350 destination and handling charge. That total includes Midnight Black Metallic paint, the Signature Plus Trim with Comfort Package, John Cooper Works Style equipment, the JCW aero kit, and $1,225 worth of exclusive 1998 GT content. It is a sizable premium over a basic Cooper C, but buyers are paying largely for rarity, appearance, and the added JCW-inspired hardware rather than a significant increase in performance.
Production of the 2027 MINI 1998 GT Edition is scheduled to begin in October 2026, with a limited number expected to reach U.S. MINI dealers starting in November. The timing also lands during MINI’s celebration of 25 years since the modern version of the brand launched, making another heritage-inspired special edition feel especially appropriate. MINI has been creating limited models for decades, and the 1998 GT follows that familiar formula well by mixing recognizable design, historical references, and just enough exclusivity to make an otherwise familiar Cooper stand out.
