The latest generation of the indomitable Toyota Hilux comes in a few configurations, depending on regional markets. Among the versions, the model with the 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine, 48-volt mild-hybrid system, and four-wheel drive is expected to be quite popular. However, Toyota may have just dropped one of the best fleet and local work trucks yet by introducing a fully electric version of the tough pickup.
Not only is the BEV version of the Hilux as tough and durable as the other versions, but Toyota also backs the battery with a warranty that could outlast the pickup. Strap in because Toyota is making its unkillable truck even more tantalizing by offering it a tough EV.
A New Level Of Warranty

Toyota’s new all-electric Hilux comes with a staggering 10-year or 1,000,000-kilometer warranty, whichever comes first. In our old-school American units, that’s 621,371 miles. For perspective, Rivian has one of the best battery warranties on the market right now at 8 years or 175,000 miles for specific truck and SUV configurations with its Max battery. Mercedes-Benz also has an impressive warranty, with the Mercedes-Benz EQS and EQE having coverage for 10 years or 155,000 miles. It’s also worth noting that Hyundai offers a ten-year warranty, but it’s limited to 100,000 miles.
All of these models, including the Toyota Hilux, are guaranteed to retain at least 70% of their original battery capacity for the length of the warranty. Known as the State of Health (SOH) floor, 70% is generally the industry standard now. General Motors has a higher SOH in its warranties, with the Ultium EV system in various Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC EVs having a 75% SOH. The federally mandated floor in the US is 8 years or 100,000 miles with a 70% SOH.
Of Course, There’s A Catch

For the Australian market, which loves the Hilux, the range is advertised up to 315 km (196 miles), with only the SR and SR5 trim levels available. For the European model, the BEV Hilux’s range is advertised as up to 380 km (236 miles) in city driving, or 257 km (160 miles) in city and highway driving combined.
The European method for estimating range is different from the one we use in the US and usually yields higher figures. Still, the electric Hilux’s range is fairly poor compared with today’s mainstream EVs. However, it’s more than 50% better than the unloved Mazda MX-30.
Given the warranty versus range here, and how Toyota is positioning the all-electric Hilux in the market, the automaker has clearly prioritized durability. The battery is an all-new 59.2-kilowatt-hour water-cooled lithium-ion unit made up of 80 cells arranged in five 16-cell modules. According to Toyota, because the Hilux is a body-on-frame vehicle, it needed to design a bespoke battery to fit without intruding on the Double Cab’s interior and load space. But “the space allowed for the necessary number of modules to be housed.”
The Technology

As mentioned, the BEV Hilux is a body-on-frame pickup truck, and Toyota promises that the electric version retains the truck’s 27.56 inches of wading depth. As standard, the BEV Hilux is four-wheel-drive, using eAxles that require a new front crossmember and an additional rear crossmember on the frame. The eAxles are also reinforced and fitted with covers to make sure they can withstand harsh off-road conditions.
The front eAxle produces 107 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque, and the rear unit produces 171 hp and 197 lb-ft. Because the torque output is instant, Toyota includes high-stiffness mounts for the eAxles to improve ride comfort, stability, and noise reduction.
As Toyota expects the BEV Hilux to go off-road, it designed a new battery sub-frame to protect the battery from torsional forces. It also sits between the vehicle’s frame and a robust cover. On top of that, the frame’s side rails are reinforced with impact-absorbing sections of aluminum to provide extra protection in the event of a collision. The electric Hilux is the first model to get Toyota’s Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) System in an EV.

With only 160 miles of range, Toyota makes it clear the Hilux is aimed primarily at businesses that want to decarbonize their vehicle fleet and comply with increasingly stringent legislation. However, these customers don’t want to compromise on performance, ruggedness, or reliability. According to Toyota, the BEV Hilux “will be particularly suited to single-location operations, such as forestry, industrial complexes and infrastructure sites such as airports and ferry terminals.”
This makes sense, as 160 miles is a lot for many single-location operations, and they can be fitted with charging sites for fast charging. On that note, the battery becomes more useful with a charging time of 10%-80% capacity within 30 minutes using a DC fast-charging system of 125 kW or more. Even with a 10 kW AC power supply from a wall, Toyota says the charger will deliver a 10%-100% charge in around 6.5 hours.
Toyota also believes the truck will be attractive to small businesses and private buyers focused on leisure use. As a local delivery truck or for a lawn care company, for example, 160 miles should be enough for most, as for private buyers and leisure use, that might be a bit of a reach with just 160 miles available. However, with a warranty of over 600,000 miles, that’s a forever truck for someone who needs a utility vehicle regularly.
The BEV Hilux Could Be A Game Changer

Clearly, someone pointed out that if it’s going to produce an electric fleet truck for commercial use, there is going to be some resistance to electric vehicles to overcome. Battery replacement costs are a common EV concern, but a Toyota-backed warranty for ten years or 621,371 miles shuts that down with extreme prejudice.
Doing car journalist math, given there’s an average of 250 workdays each year, and a pickup doesn’t take vacation time, a truck would have to cover just over 92.2 miles every working day to hit 600,000 in 10 years. So, over 100 miles a day to hit that 600,000 with some comfort in under ten years. For particularly hard-working trucks, the warranty is going to be brilliant. For lesser-used trucks, it’s effectively a ten-year warranty, which is still excellent.
With that warranty, and paying electricity prices rather than petrol prices, the BEV Hilux looks incredibly attractive for spreadsheet and acquisition departments. And, with onsite charging, the truck wouldn’t have to leave the site to fill up on gas or diesel. Of course, if the site, a farm, for example, already has its own fuel supply, there will have to be discussions and spreadsheets.
The US Proposition

The US is one of the world’s biggest vehicle markets, and its enormous, well-populated landmass supports many single-location operations. It seems like an obvious place for a BEV truck designed with that in mind. However, the American pickup truck market hasn’t taken to all-electric trucks, with the most noticeable example being Ford, the king of pickups in the US, having to end production of the Lightning as it wasn’t making a profit.
However, Ford is pushing ahead with its mid-sized sub-$30,000 all-electric pickup, called the Fathom. Also in the same sort of space will be the Slate Truck. However, neither will be a body-on-frame truck, and likely neither will be as robust as the Hilux. Since changing the Hilux to meet US demand would likely be a lengthy and expensive process, we wouldn’t be surprised if Toyota finally pulls the trigger on an all-electric Tacoma.
Toyota will likely watch the impact of its warranty on BEV pickup adoption worldwide before finalizing an electric Tacoma. Since the US isn’t as stringent as the rest of the world, at least right now, it would only sell an equivalent here based on cost efficiency for businesses and government agencies, which is something that is growing stronger month by month due to the consistently rising price of gas and diesel.
