Greedy Ford Dealers Are Slamming $50k Markups On Mustang Dark Horse SC

It’s happened before, and it will happen again. Certain car dealers just can’t resist the opportunity to tack additional charges on the hood of a hot new car, truck, or SUV. Dealer markups on average approached 20% (about $15,000) when the C8 Chevy Corvette launched in 2020. At Ford, the Maverick, Bronco, and Raptor variants of the Bronco and F-150, fell prey to price gouging, as did the 2002 Thunderbird.

Now, the 2026 Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC is reaching showrooms, and you might pay well above the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, depending on the scruples of your local dealer.

Dealer Markups Are Out Of Control

If you live in Santa Cruz, California, be prepared to pay $175,850 for the supercharged Dark Horse at North Bay Ford. That’s $55,275 over the $120,575 MSRP, amounting to a 46% “price adjustment.” Does this price include the $36,500 Track Pack option?

The North Bay Ford online listing for the car doesn’t mention the Track Pack, but the price does include the $2,600 gas guzzler tax and $10,000 carbon-fiber exterior package. While the Dark Horse SC coupe carries a base MSRP of $103,490, the federally required window sticker for this car shows an all-in price of $120,575, including the options mentioned and the $1,995 destination charge.

Why Does Ford Let Dealers Get Away With This?

The Dark Horse SC is an impressive muscle car, with a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 hand-assembled in Dearborn and cranking out 795 horsepower and 660 pound-feet of torque through a seven-speed Tremec dual-clutch transmission. Someone who really wants this car and can afford it might not even mind paying well over sticker price. It’s the free market, unseemly as this situation might be.

While North Bay Ford might be an extreme example of price gouging for Dark Horse SC, there are others. At Young Ford in Ogden, Utah, a Dark Horse SC painted Avalanche Gray will cost you $141,083, even though the window sticker price says $110,635, which includes destination, gas guzzler tax, and $1,995 for the Recaro sport seats. But the front license plate bracket is no charge.

‘See Dealer Notes’ About ‘Performance Upfit’

The Young Ford online listing includes $30,000 for a “performance upfit,” and shoppers are encouraged to “See dealer notes for details on the accessories included on this vehicle.” We checked those dealer notes, and they say nothing about $30,000 in optional equipment.

We’ve left messages with both the Young and North Bay Ford dealerships, but neither location has responded to our request for comment.

We also contacted Ford about dealer pricing. A company spokesperson provided the following statement:

“Dealers are independent franchises and ultimately the final price a customer will pay for any vehicle is agreed between themselves and a dealer that’s at, below, or above MSRP.”

Supply And Demand Ultimately Drive Pricing

But automotive analyst Sam Abuelsamid, vice president of Telemetry Insights, tells CarBuzz these price adjustments are all too common for sought-after models with limited availability, while franchise laws prevent auto manufacturers from doing much to combat the problem. Consider the guy who spent $40 million for the first Ferrari Luce at auction last month.

“Early on, supplies are limited and if the demand is there, dealers will take advantage of the situation as they did during the chip shortage and whenever a popular new model arrives.”

    –Sam Abuelsamid, Telemetry Insights VP

    Launch Editions Are Markups, Too

Automakers have limited ability “to influence dealers away from markups by controlling allocations, but that sometimes leads to litigation,” Abuelsamid says. This explains why some consumers have embraced direct-to-consumer sales for startups like Tesla and Rivian. But even then, consumers can face similar premiums as “launch” editions roll out loaded with options. “Tesla took it to an extreme with the Cybertruck by only offering the “Foundation Series” at launch,” a $20,000 add-on that included a light bar of questionable use.

“Really the only way to deal with this greed is for consumers to just say no, and walk away from dealers that insist on a markup.”

When Ford launched the Maverick in late 2021, some dealers were charging premiums of more than $5,000, Abuelsamid says, “so Ford decided to take that money for themselves by raising the MSRP by an equivalent amount and then some.”

CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:

Don’t be too quick to judge a shopper who doesn’t mind paying well above sticker price for a car. We all know how strong that bond can be, even if mainstream shoppers struggle to understand the appeal of a muscle car like the Dark Horse SC. While motivation and desire are powerful forces, so is greed.

A dealer might only get one of these special Mustangs, which means only one paying customer is necessary. As long as people pay, dealers will charge it. And maybe that $30,000 “performance upfit” includes complimentary undercoating.
