Tesla Cybertruck Powershare Installation
Tesla’s Cybertruck Powershare feature can now back up your home at the same time as a Powerwall 3, the company announced Thursday. Run together, the truck and the battery add more than three days of backup power, which Tesla says is the equivalent of nine extra Powerwalls.
It’s a feature Tesla first promised for 2025, and it’s showing up nearly two years after Cybertruck deliveries began. But it finally closes one of Powershare’s most annoying gaps.
What actually changed
Until now, Powershare could back up a home, but not if the house already had a Powerwall. Owners had to pick one or the other. That made the truck useless as backup for exactly the buyers most likely to want it: people already bought into Tesla’s home energy hardware.
Now the two work as one system. The Powerwall 3 runs the house the way it always has, and the Cybertruck’s 123 kWh pack extends the runtime. Tesla’s “nine additional Powerwalls” math checks out, since a single Powerwall holds 13.5 kWh and nine of those lands right around the truck’s battery size.
Powershare pushes up to 11.5 kW into the home and needs a Universal Wall Connector and a Powershare Gateway. That hardware runs around $4,000 installed, as we covered when Powershare first launched. Some owners got quoted much more. One was told over $30,000.
Years of delays
Tesla launched Powershare with the Cybertruck in late 2023, and in October 2024 told owners Powerwall integration was coming “sometime in 2025.” That date came and went. In December 2025, Tesla pushed the timeline to mid-2026, which it admitted was nearly a full calendar year later than owners had been told. As recently as late August, Cybertruck lead engineer Wes Morrill still had no date to give, telling owners only that he’d share an update “when there is something new.”
Morrill has blamed the difficulty on the engineering. Getting two grid-forming devices (the truck and the Powerwall) to coordinate power safely without a network, across different hardware generations, plus the grid-safety certifications, took longer than anyone expected.
Tesla has spent the year turning the Cybertruck’s battery into a grid asset. It launched a Cybertruck vehicle-to-grid program in Texas in February and made the truck the first AC vehicle-to-grid asset in California through PG&E in April. Home backup alongside a Powerwall was the last consumer piece missing.
