Volvo is pulling the EX40 from its US lineup, leaving the $60,000 EX60 as the brand’s most affordable EV, at least for now.

Volvo EX40 EV discontinued in the US after 2027

After it discontinued the EX30, its smallest, most affordable EV, earlier this year, Volvo is pulling yet another electric vehicle from its US lineup.

The EX40, which initially arrived in 2019 as the Volvo XC40 Recharge, will be dropped following the 2027 model year.

Volvo introduced the updated EX40, which will continue to be sold in Europe, but it will not be available in the US or Canada.

With the EX30, EC40, and now EX40 gone, the EX60 will be Volvo’s most affordable electric vehicle, starting at about $60,000. According to an Automotive News report, a new entry-level EV will arrive soon to replace it.

Volvo is reportedly planning to launch a new electric crossover by the end of 2027, starting at under $50,000.

The new EX50 will ride on Volvo’s SPA3 platform, the same one that underpins the EX60, bringing much-needed improvements, including a longer driving range, faster charging, and more interior space.

Volvo filed a trademark with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) under the name EX50 on July 14, 2026. Although the filing didn’t reveal much, it did confirm it will, in fact, be electric.

According to the AN report, Volvo’s new electric EX50 crossover will be taller and longer than the current EX40.

While $50,000 isn’t necessarily what most would consider an “entry-level” vehicle, it is still cheaper than the EX60.

The 2027 Volvo EX60 P6 Plus starts at $59,795 (including destination fee) and offers an EPA-estimated range of up to 307 miles. The outgoing 2026 EX40 starts at $56,545 and offers up to 296 miles of range.

As the first vehicle based on its SPA3 platform, Volvo calls the EX60 a “game-changing SUV,” offering more than enough range, ultra-fast charging, and improved performance.

Thanks to its 800V electrical architecture, the new EX60 can add 165 miles of range in just 10 minutes.

It’s also Volvo’s first EV with a built-in NACS charge port, enabling access to over 29,000 Tesla Superchargers without an adapter.

    Measuring 189.1″ in length, 81.4″ in width, and 64.4″ in height, with a wheelbase of 116.9″, the EX60 is about the size of a Tesla Model Y (188.8″ L x 83.8 ” W x 63.4″ H).

    Electrek’s Take

While it is sad to see another EV being discontinued in the US, hopefully Volvo comes through and launches the new EX50 in 2027.

The EX40 was a solid electric SUV, and still is. However, with the Trump Administration’s policy changes, including ending the $7,500 federal EV tax credit and the added import tariffs, Volvo has struggled to sell electric vehicles in the US.

Volvo already scaled back on its commitment to go all-electric by 2030. The EX60 is only about $3,000 more than the EX40, but $60,000 is still not cheap.

At about $50,000, the upcoming EX50 will become Volvo’s new entry-level EV, which is still around $15,000 more than the promised $35,000 EX30 that never arrived in the US.
