Scout Motors has much to do before its battery-electric Traveler SUV and Terra pickup hit American roads. Finishing the $2 billion assembly plant in Blythewood, South Carolina, would be the top priority. Once the body shop and paint shop are ready, and the state finishes the dedicated highway access, pre-series production will begin, followed by assembly of salable units, likely in 2028.
So what’s the product-development team to do while waiting two more years before customers can finally drive the Traveler and Terra? Start rolling out concepts that might end up being offered as production trim levels or variants, of course.
Two SUV Concepts, But Only One Has A Real Name

If you’re spending this Labor Day weekend in rugged Colorado at the Jazz Aspen Snowmass music festival seeing everyone from Shaboozey to Bonnie Raitt, you’ll likely see these two concepts, one looking more upscale and luxurious, the other geared for ambitious off-roaders. This will be the first public appearance for the concepts, alongside the Terra pickup truck.
The Mountainside concept is meant to give the Traveler a refined, premium feel, painted a deep brown that Scout calls Morning Dusk. The other concept is just called “trail-ready,” lowercase, as if there wasn’t time to come up with an actual name. But its purpose is pretty clear, thanks to 35-inch off-road tires on 18-inch beadlock wheels with full-metal front and rear bumpers, a front winch, and rear tow hooks.
Do Concepts Suggest Scout Launch Is On Track?

This week’s press release says the company is starting to test and validate early prototype vehicles “as it prepares for production, with customer deliveries expected to begin in 2028.” As of this past spring, 160,000 potential customers put down $100 deposits for a Scout. If two years seems like a long time for customers to wait, perhaps the new concepts will keep them interested.
Meanwhile, here’s how the marketing team describes the essence of the Mountainside concept. “Its design evokes the feeling of returning home after a long day outdoors: warm, welcoming, and built around authentic materials that become more personal with time.”
The Morning Dusk exterior finish is deep charcoal-brown with subtle golden metallic highlights that appear in direct sunlight. The Mountainside concept (in gallery above) gets a panoramic sunroof and 22-inch Vault anodized black wheels wrapped in 35-inch rubber.
Trail-Ready Concept Pushes Rugged Capability
Painted in Galvanized Steel silver, the trail-ready Traveler is inspired by “raw metal, honest utility, and equipment built to withstand demanding environments.” The elevated black roof rack on a white roof provides contrast and displays its rugged, functional side. Concept accessories also include rock rails and an exterior spare-tire carrier.

Production Interiors Yet To Be Confirmed
Like the exteriors, the cabins of the Mountainside and trail-ready are both concepts. “We’re looking to see what consumers like and are interested in,” a Scout spokesperson tells CarBuzz via email. “We haven’t announced any production interiors yet.” Still, Scout has displayed some interiors in the Terra and Traveler, and these latest concepts carry those familiar themes forward.
In the Mountainside, Scout calls the interior color palette Alpine District (see gallery above), with semi-aniline leather and earthy recycled walnut trim on the instrument panel and doors. Custom gray woven fabrics use some of the plaid found in historic Scout interiors. Though not identical, the Mountainside’s cabin is close to the gray leather interior that was displayed in the Terra truck earlier this year in Michigan.
Brick Red Interior For Trail-Ready

Unlike with the Mountainside, Scout didn’t share interior images for the trail-ready Traveler. But the automaker says that concept has a version of the Brick Red cabin that was seen in the Traveler in March (pictured above). Scout calls the trail-ready’s interior the Denim District, inspired by “durable American workwear and the Scout brand’s agricultural roots.” For this rugged off-roader, Scout wanted to emphasize modern design, function, durability, and character. Perhaps these materials can be spray washed after a day on the dusty trail?
Isn’t It A Bit Early To See Scout Concepts?
It was four years ago when Volkswagen Group announced it was reviving the Scout brand with an electric truck and SUV to be built in the US, and the Traveler and Terra were revealed in October 2024, with confirmation that an extended-range powertrain would be available. Since then, the Trump administration canceledfederal EV tax credits and slapped tariffs on imported vehicles – two actions that have absolutely hammered the VW Group’s bottom line.

Scout CEO Scott Keogh has insisted the brand rollout’s timeline is unchanged and has not been delayed, although AutoForecast Solutions continues to report that production of the Terra pickup truck could be pushed back to 2030.
CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:
With the Mountainside and trail-ready concepts debuting this weekend in Colorado, Scout can gauge public reaction and remind consumers in an important EV market that, yes, Scout vehicles are still on the way, even while the company faces legal challenges for its direct-to-consumer sales model.
Colorado checks another big box as a popular region for off-roading, so the trail-ready concept (see gallery below) might get some traction there. But does Scout’s use of the Traveler SUV for these concepts suggest that it’s a higher priority than the Terra truck? If that’s the case, perhaps the AFS forecast is on the mark.
