When the eighth-generation Volkswagen Golf GTI arrived, it was praised for its responsive handling and everyday practicality. Still, even beloved icons have room for improvement. Owners on enthusiast forums like VW Vortex and GolfMK7.com voiced their frustrations, particularly with the car’s touch-sensitive steering wheel controls and a sluggish, overly complex infotainment system. Instead of ignoring these complaints, Volkswagen took the feedback seriously. The result? The Golf 8.5 GTI facelift, a car that addresses its predecessor’s shortcomings while preserving all the qualities that have made the GTI a benchmark in the hot hatch segment. Here are ten ways Volkswagen proved it was listening.

Volkswagen Finally Brought Back Physical Buttons

One of the greatest sources of frustration for Mk8 Golf GTI owners was the touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel. The idea of integrating modern technology was understandable, but the reality fell short. Accidental presses became a common occurrence, and drivers often found themselves glancing away from the road just to adjust basic settings.

For a car designed for driving enjoyment, these distractions felt entirely out of place. That’s why Volkswagen’s decision to reinstate proper physical buttons on the steering wheel for the Golf 8.5 GTI is so significant. The improvement is immediately apparent: controls are easy to locate by feel, inputs are intentional, and interacting with the car is now far less frustrating. This simple change transforms daily driving, making it much more intuitive. After spending time behind the wheel, it’s clear that this return to basics is a marked improvement over the outgoing GTI, making the driving experience far more enjoyable and focused.

    Fixed The Infotainment System

The original Mk8 GTI’s infotainment system looked the part but too often failed to deliver in practice. Owners and reviewers alike complained about sluggish responses, needlessly complicated menus, and frustrating multi-step processes for simple tasks. Volkswagen listened and responded with a comprehensive update for the Golf 8.5 GTI.

The new model features a larger, 12.9-inch touchscreen running the faster and more intuitive MIB4 system. The interface has been overhauled with clearer menus, quicker responses, and customizable shortcuts, all of which help streamline interactions. A particularly nice touch is the addition of illuminated climate sliders, making adjustments easier after dark—a small but meaningful improvement.

In daily use, the difference is striking. Navigation is now fast and fluid, the overall theme is clean and uncluttered, and the system finally feels as user-friendly as drivers expect from a modern Volkswagen. Fix the cockpit, and you’d expect the GTI to feel complete. But the real question was whether Volkswagen had the discipline to leave its best driving tool completely alone.

Knew Better Than To Touch The VAQ Differential

There’s wisdom in knowing what not to change, and Volkswagen demonstrated just that by leaving the electronically controlled VAQ limited-slip differential untouched for the Golf 8.5 GTI. In contrast to a conventional open differential, the VAQ system can proactively distribute torque between the front wheels, reducing wheelspin and understeer while improving traction out of corners. On the road, this feature remains one of the GTI’s defining strengths.

During spirited drives in the updated 8.5 GTI, the more aggressively I pushed through bends, the more the car inspired confidence. Instead of fighting for grip, the front end would simply dig in and carry impressive speed, all while the VAQ system worked quietly in the background. The result is a sense of agility and precision that few front-wheel-drive cars can match. Volkswagen’s choice to focus on refining technology and interior features, while leaving the VAQ differential alone, means that the very essence of the GTI’s dynamic character remains intact.

Refreshed The Design Without Overdoing It

Visually, the Golf 8.5 GTI’s updates are subtle, but effective. Rather than chasing dramatic change, Volkswagen opted for gradual evolution. The revised model features a redesigned bumper, a slimmer grille, and new LED headlights and taillights. The look is cleaner and distinctly modern, yet unmistakably GTI.

These changes only stand out when the new car is parked beside its predecessor, reflecting Volkswagen’s philosophy of evolution rather than revolution. The result is a car that still turns heads without alienating loyal fans who appreciate the GTI’s traditional styling cues. Owners who liked the Mk8’s design will find the 8.5’s sharper lines and enhanced lighting deliver a more contemporary presence without losing the car’s iconic identity.

IQ.Light Matrix Headlights Let You Run High Beams Through Traffic

The improvements to the Golf 8.5 GTI’s lighting go beyond aesthetics. In select markets, Volkswagen’s IQ.Light Matrix LED headlights offer a benefit once the sun goes down. These advanced headlights automatically adjust the beam pattern to maximize visibility while preventing glare for oncoming drivers.

Unlike traditional headlights, which simply toggle between high and low beams, the IQ.Light system can selectively dim certain parts of the beam. This allows drivers to use high beams more often, even with traffic ahead, dramatically improving visibility on poorly lit roads and reducing nighttime fatigue. After driving the 8.5 GTI after dark, I found the system to be a quiet but constant enhancement—one that doesn’t alter performance numbers, but makes every evening journey safer and less tiring.

Left The Excellent Sports Seats Alone

With the Golf 8.5 GTI, Volkswagen wisely chose not to alter the sports seats, a feature that was never a weakness in the previous model. My test car was equipped with the optional leather sports seats, which struck a perfect balance between comfort and support. Through fast corners, they kept me securely in place, while on longer trips, they remained plush and accommodating.

Combined with the low seating position, thick-rimmed steering wheel, and well-placed pedals, the driving position remains both engaging and easy to live with. Where some rivals opt for aggressive bolstering at the expense of comfort, the GTI’s seats are a reminder that everyday usability doesn’t have to come at the cost of driving enjoyment.

Resisted The Urge To Stiffen The Suspension—And It Pays Off Daily

Volkswagen’s engineers could have stiffened the Golf 8.5 GTI’s suspension in an attempt to keep up with more hardcore competitors, but instead, they retained the much-admired adaptive chassis. The system continues to provide a wide spread of adjustability between Comfort and Sport modes.

In Comfort, the GTI is composed and supple, soaking up rough road surfaces with surprising ease. Switch to Sport, and the car tightens up, bringing more body control and sharper responses, yet never becoming harsh or jittery. This adaptability means the GTI feels equally at home during a daily commute as it does on a spirited weekend drive.

The 241-HP EA888 Still Delivers The Right Mix Of Performance And Efficiency

Under the hood, Volkswagen has preserved the GTI’s proven formula. The 8.5 GTI continues with the robust 2.0-liter turbocharged EA888 four-cylinder engine, producing 241 horsepower and 273 pound-fet of torque, paired with a seven-speed DSG transmission. This setup enables a 0-60 mph sprint in about 5.6 seconds, which, while not the quickest in the segment, remains more than adequate for real-world driving.

What’s truly impressive is the engine’s flexibility. In everyday use, I averaged 29.4 mpg, while spirited driving saw that figure drop to 13.8 mpg. Official EPA estimates stand at 24 mpg in the city, 32 mpg on the highway, and 27 mpg combined. The GTI’s blend of efficiency and performance ensures it remains a practical choice for enthusiasts who don’t want to compromise on either front.

    Volkswagen Didn’t Sacrifice Everyday Practicality

Despite its sporty credentials, the Golf 8.5 GTI continues to deliver outstanding practicality. The five-door hatchback layout offers comfortable seating for five and a generous 19.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats. Fold the rear bench down, and the GTI transforms into a spacious hauler, providing versatility that few performance cars can match.

The cabin feels open and airy, visibility is excellent, and the back seat accommodates adults with ease. Unlike some rivals, such as the Toyota GR Corolla, which leans more toward uncompromising capability, the GTI manages to provide everyday comfort. Practicality stands out as much as performance—a true testament to the GTI’s well-rounded appeal.

A Worthy Send-Off If This Really Is the Last Gas-Powered GTI

2025 Volkswagen Golf GTI rear shot parkedVolkswagen

Most facelifts chase headlines with flashier looks, more power, or new tech. The Golf 8.5 GTI takes a different route. Instead of overhauling a proven formula, Volkswagen targeted owner complaints and left the GTI’s core strengths intact—something rare in today’s market, where change often trumps refinement.

With a starting price of about $34,590 in the U.S., the GTI isn’t the cheapest hot hatch, but it’s easy to recommend. After a week of testing, what stood out wasn’t one feature, but how well the updates work together. The return of real steering wheel buttons, a far better infotainment system, and smart tweaks throughout the cabin make it more polished and user-friendly, without losing the daily usability that’s defined the GTI for decades.

It’s not the most memorable GTI ever made. Earlier models had a raw edge that’s tough to replicate under today’s emissions rules, and the 8.5’s muted exhaust is proof of how much the segment has changed. But measuring this car only by its predecessors misses the point. The Golf 8.5 GTI isn’t about nostalgia. It’s about making the best GTI for today’s drivers—and mostly, it works. This could be the last gas-powered GTI before the move to electric. If it is, it’s a worthy send-off. Volkswagen proves that listening to customers beats chasing numbers. The smartest changes are the ones that make a great car even easier to live with.
