BYD’s flash charging network reaches 10,000 stations, halfway to full-year target

    • BYD doubled its flash charging network in less than 5 months, but must still add about 80 stations a day on average to meet its full-year target.
    • The network has delivered 210 million kWh of electricity, with drivers of other vehicle brands accounting for nearly one-third of its users.

BYD (HKEX: 1211) has opened its 10,000th flash charging station in China in Shenzhen, bringing its ultra-fast charging network halfway to its full-year target.

The new energy vehicle (NEV) giant announced the milestone on Friday at its flagship flash charging station in Shenzhen’s Longhua district.

BYD said it has become the Chinese automaker with the largest self-built charging network and the broadest geographic coverage, as well as the fastest to build 10,000 charging stations.

Its flash charging stations now cover locations including Hulunbuir, Sanya, Shuangyashan and Kashgar, showing that the network is extending beyond major cities into a wider range of markets.

BYD put its 5,000th flash charging station into operation on April 1, meaning the network doubled in size in less than 5 months.

The company reiterated its target of reaching 20,000 stations by the end of 2026. To meet that goal, however, BYD must add another 10,000 stations over the next roughly 4 months.

From August 29 through the end of the year, it would need to build about 80 stations a day on average, more than twice its average pace over the past 5 months.

BYD said its flash charging network has delivered a cumulative 210 million kWh of electricity in less than 6 months of operation and attracted more than 1.83 million users.

Drivers of vehicles from other brands account for nearly one-third of the total, indicating that the network is also beginning to attract non-BYD owners.

BYD has partnered with companies including Sinopec, PetroChina, CNOOC, Teld and JD.com to accelerate station deployment and expand coverage.

The next-generation flash charger unveiled in March has a maximum output of 1,500 kW per connector, with each unit equipped with 2 charging connectors.

When paired with the second-generation Blade Battery, the system can charge a vehicle from 10% to 97% in 9 minutes, BYD said at the time.

Under its plan, 18,000 of the 20,000 stations will be built in partnership with charging network operators, while the other 2,000 will be deployed along highways.

The network is open to electric vehicles from other brands, though actual charging speeds depend on each vehicle’s battery and charging capabilities.

BYD is also taking its flash charging network overseas. The company has built its first stations in the UK and plans to deploy 300 there by the end of the year.

BYD sold 419,211 NEVs at wholesale in July, up 21.76% year-on-year, the third consecutive month of annual growth.
