Other Costs Of iX Ownership Worth Considering

We’ve included a section which details the other costs of ownership potential buyers will need to factor in when considering a used iX.

BMW once dubbed the iX its technology flagship, but five years after it first appeared, America isn’t even getting another one. Instead, BMW is tempting shoppers with a 2027 iX3, featuring the company’s impressive Neue Klasse technology. This means that the much-touted technology flagship has been overtaken by the technology that it helped BMW develop. And analysts expect BMW’s headline-making iX to lose significant value as time marches on and the world of motoring seizes on the next best thing.

BMW Has Already Called Time On The iX In America

In April 2026, BMW confirmed that it was halting US allocations of the iX while it shifted towards its next generation of electric vehicles. Production would continue for other markets, so the iX hasn’t been killed globally, but the remaining 2026 dealer inventory represents the end of the line in the States.

This is a big departure from those heady days when, five years earlier, BMW introduced the iX as something that would be far more significant than just another electric SUV. The company called the iX its technology “flagship” and something that would bring together all its work in electrification, connectivity, design, and digital services. And it even went so far as to say that this would be a “workshop for the future.”

But when the future arrived, it presented itself in the shape of the iX3 50 xDrive, which was the company’s first US market Neue Klasse model. It goes on sale in the fall of 2026 at $61,500 before destination and produces 463 horsepower and 476 lb-ft of torque. It can get to 60 mph in an estimated 4.7 seconds and offers a range between 383 and 434 miles, depending on wheel and tire size.

It also has an 800 V electrical system, and this accepts as much as 400 kW from a compatible DC charger. And while it may not be a direct replacement for the iX (as that’s coming in the shape of an iX5), the iX3 nevertheless demonstrates how quickly that once-cutting-edge electrical hardware aboard the iX has aged.

The iX Has Lost 47.5% In Three Years, But Five Years Looks Worse

    2026 BMW iXBMW

iSeeCars analyzed more than 15 million vehicles, looking at model depreciation over three, five, seven, and 10-year periods. According to the company, current calculations suggest the BMW iX loses 47.5% after three years, equivalent to $35,678 in depreciation, and leaving a $39,472 residual value. And actually, that’s slightly better than the average luxury electric mid-size SUV in the marketplace, because as a batch, those vehicles recorded an even greater 54.4% drop over three years.

However, the five-year metric doesn’t look so good at all for the iX. Here, the same company suggests that the iX loses 68.6% at five years, versus 61.2% for luxury electric mid-size SUVs generally. That represents a 7.4 percentage point disadvantage, and the situation generally goes downhill from there. At seven years, iSeeCars projects 79.7% depreciation, versus 73.8% for the class, and at 10 years it’s 86.5%, versus 82.2%. All of this suggests that the iX is not a particularly safe place to park money, with long-term residuals that are worse than the already punishing averages for premium electric SUVs.

To be fair, the iX3 doesn’t bear sole responsibility for those heavy depreciation levels, and luxury EV depreciation has many causes. The value of the iX had already fallen heavily before BMW finalized the iX3’s American launch anyway, but those iX figures nevertheless underline something significant. High-end EVs can be particularly vulnerable because the technology that made the headlines and looked exotic when the first owners signed the paperwork can look merely adequate when second owners start to come into the picture.

BMW’s New $61,500 EV Shows How Quickly The Technology Moved

It’s plain to see just how fast the situation can evolve in this sector if you put the outgoing 2026 iX xDrive 45 alongside the incoming iX3. For a start, the new iX3 costs $13,650 less than the iX xDrive 45. The latter vehicle costs $75,150 before destination and boasts 402 hp, up to 312 miles of range, and a maximum DC charging rate of 175 kW.

By contrast, the iX3 is not only cheaper but it makes 61 hp more. It also offers up to 122 miles more maximum range and can theoretically deal with more than twice the peak DC charging power. Certainly, the maximum range figures will depend on tire packages, so they’re not a universal real-world comparison, but the technological advances are nevertheless clear to see.

In the iX3, buyers will also now get BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology, which reduces drive-train energy losses by 40% compared with the previous generation. And even better, it cuts drive system weight by 10% and reduces manufacturing costs by 20%. The iX3 has cylindrical battery cells, bidirectional charging capability, 800 V architecture, BMW Panoramic iDrive, and the new Heart of Joy controller to centralize chassis and powertrain functions. And all of that makes life quite hard for the iX, which, don’t forget, was touted as the headline-making technological flagship.

As it turns out, the iX3 is only the opening act and the iX5 60 xDrive will join the chat in the first quarter of 2027. That will retail for $79,800 before destination and provide an estimated 435 miles of range from a 144-kWh battery. It’ll have 570 hp, 593 lb-ft, and an 800 V system, and allow charging at up to 460 kW. It’ll also sit in the same larger and more luxurious part of the market once populated by the iX. So, effectively, BMW has split the job of the older iX between two Neue Klasse-era SUVs and there wasn’t much room left in the middle.

Being Obsolete On Paper Doesn’t Make The iX A Bad Vehicle

Even though the iX is on its way out of the US market, it’s still a perfectly capable automobile. It recorded 290 miles of range in a 75-mph highway range test, which actually exceeded the nominal 279-mile EPA rating. Testers also found that the iX had good handling, was quiet on board at interstate speeds and that it was both comfortable on rough roads and composed through corners.

And this is hardly a case of the iX becoming suddenly slow, cramped, noisy, or uncomfortable simply because BMW found some new technology. The vehicle is far from obsolete from a practical point of view, even though many might consider it to be just that from a technological perspective. It’s still capable of more than 300 miles under the right specification, with sports-car-rivaling acceleration. And it hasn’t somehow failed because its replacement generation is better.

BMW Killing The iX Could Make A Used One More Interesting

    2025 BMW iX in redBMW

BMW’s official US sales data appears to show the iX model in retreat before the iX3 rolls into showrooms. For example, the company sold only 1,657 iX models in the second quarter of 2026, and that was down from 3,116 a year earlier. In the first half, the slowdown continued, marking a 48.9% decline over the previous year, and all this happened while total BMW brand US sales increased by 4.7%.

It’s possible that shoppers were running into reduced availability as BMW wound its allocations down. And it’s hard to know whether shoppers were actually reacting to its price, responding to the broader EV market, or just waiting for newer EVs to arrive.

The vehicle’s discontinuation does make it interesting for used car shoppers, as the pre-owned market soon becomes the only route into this particular BMW. And BMW is already advertising special financing on Certified Pre-Owned 2022–2024 iX models. And all this means that the iX may yet have a trick card up its sleeve as depreciation might turn its greatest weakness into its strongest argument. It’s still important to remember those depreciation projections, however, as while used values may initially appear quite attractive, there’s no guarantee that values have hit bottom at all.

Across the industry as a whole, the upcoming iX3 shows just how much electric technology can improve in only one generation, even as the iX still did its job well. But in the cut and thrust of that market, BMW learned what it needed to learn from the iX, developed better tech, and then ruthlessly moved on. And while some may represent a harsh lesson in depreciation for the first owner who hung on to every initial headline, that same kind of decision-making may yet present a strong opportunity to today’s used-car buyer.

Other Costs Of iX Ownership Worth Considering

A used example might seem like an ideal purchase given the severe depreciation afflicting the model, and while the residual values are likely tempting for many, insurance, repair, maintenance, and fuel costs also need to be considered when lining up a prospective purchase.

Data collected by CarEdge tells us that insurance could be a significant cost, with the site suggesting bills upward of $30,000 over a five-year ownership period, but on the flip side, fuel and maintenance costs are considerably lower, at $2,785 and $3,697 respectively. Due to the age of the iX, there isn’t an awful lot of reliability data that could build a true long-term ownership picture, but the fact early models have been exposed to north of 10 recalls could be something of a red flag.

The NHTSA details recalls relating to loss of drive power, high-voltage battery failure, short-circuit fire risks and more, so be sure to double-check that any potential purchase has been into the dealer and had all outstanding recalls addressed in full.
