Every sports car company is always chasing numbers. Whether it’s how fast it goes around a lap of the Nürburgring, the amount of cylinders they can cram into the engine bay, or, most commonly, how many ponies they can eke out of every last drop of fuel. Take the Hennessey Venom F5 – 2,000 horsepower from a V8 just makes your head hurt, as I found out recently while blasting up th Goodwood Hill Climb in the passenger seat.

With every iteration, these companies add turbochargers, hybrid technology, or some other wizardry for extra power — but when does it become too much? We’ve compiled a list of our favorite cars on sale in 2026 that don’t hit the 500 horsepower mark and focus more on fun rather than outright performance. After all, you can’t use all those horses out on the public road without landing yourself in trouble.

    Mazda MX-5 Miata

    181 Horsepower

    2026 Mazda MX-5 MiataMazda

“The chassis is perfectly balanced to invite any driving style to have fun with. It’s a classic sports car with modern design and engineering implemented damn near perfectly.”

    – Ian Wright, Senior Road Tester, CarBuzz

No list of fun cars under 500 horsepower is complete without the most sold roadster in history. The Mazda MX-5 Miata has always shown how small fun cars are done to other automakers, staying light and naturally aspirated in the face of growing legislation. Near 50/50 weight distribution, rear-wheel-drive, and 181 horsepower through a 2.0-liter engine mean you don’t need to break the law to break a smile.

    Porsche 911 Carrera T

    388 Horsepower

    2025 Prosche 911 Carrera T Coupe Rear 3/4Porsche

“By making the Carrera T the only one available with a manual transmission, Porsche has carved more of a niche for it as the obvious choice for owners who care more about driving pleasure than quoting magazine times.”

    – Jared Rosenholtz, Former Editor-at-Large, CarBuzz

To any non-Porsche 911 enthusiast, the endless iterations get tiring. All you need to understand is that the Carrera T is the base model that’s available with a manual. That means a 388-horsepower turbocharged flat-six engine, a slick six-speed shift, and the usual poise you’d expect from a Porsche. While the 500-horsepower manual GT3 might steal the spotlight, the T is the choice for those who don’t need to shout about their driving dynamics.

    Lotus Emira

    400 Horsepower

The Lotus Emira has almost 400 hp… and a six-speed manual gearbox sending the power to the rear wheels. Like a good Lotus should.Lotus

‘Simplify and add lightness’ was always the phrase Lotus founder Colin Chapman used when designing a car. While their other cars suffer from too much complexity and weight, the Emira is delightfully crisp as a sports car. Both the four-pot AMG engine and the familiar Toyota 3.5L supercharged V6 make 400 horsepower, though the latter can be paired with a manual transmission.

It’s a rarity on modern roads now, but the Lotus brand deserves to live on through cars like this. There’s now even a 420 Sport, which has, you guessed it, 420 horsepower. It also comes with lowered sports suspension and some aerodynamic bits glued on, but the ‘regular’ 400 horsepower version is a perfect daily.

    Honda Prelude

    200 Horsepower

    2026 Honda Prelude white dynamicHonda

“This is a momentum car, just like every Prelude that preceded it, but a few details have changed: you no longer need to keep the engine revving near its max to have any torque and a manual transmission isn’t necessary to feel engagement.”

    – Jared Rosenholtz, Former Editor-at-Large, CarBuzz

The Prelude has one of the most complex powertrains of any modern car, so we’re not going to try to explain it here, but all you need to know is that it works brilliantly. It may not have a manual, but the simulated gearshifts engage you easily enough, and the damping is properly impressive. This car shows that a tiny 200-horsepower engine with hybrid power can be super fun — as long as you go in with open eyes.

    Volkswagen Golf GTI

    241 Horsepower

Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 Nurburgring RecordVolkswagen

History’s most famous blue-collar performance car might have grown in price pretty sharply, but its front-wheel-drive layout and impressive comfort show that hot hatchbacks are still some of the best cars on the road. 241 horsepower is all you really need in this Golf GTI — any more and you’re greedy. If you’re not a fan of big decals or vents, the Golf has just enough spice for a daily sports car.

Don’t sniff at cars that don’t have that ‘golden’ balance of rear-drive, as the classic understeer troupe is long-gone through clever differentials. If you’re just cruising, though, the Golf will feel like any other boring hatchback thanks to clever dampers that slacken off to make it compliant. It’s no surprise that this is the people’s performance car, when it does everything so annoyingly well.

    Subaru BRZ

    228 Horsepower

    2027 Subaru BRZSubaru

When two Japanese powerhouses come together, great things happen. Just look at the Subaru BRZ, which is almost identical to the Toyota GR86. Subaru has given this car a much-needed power boost compared to its predecessor, but the BRZ still comes with only 228 ponies. That means every gear shift must be intentional and revs need to be kept up — all of which only adds to the fun.

With the optional Brembo brakes, the fun comes in figuring out how late you can brake, and if you go for the tS model, we found the suspension to be a great compromise between firmness and playful leaning in the corners. Anyone who tells you that a car needs more power doesn’t quite understand what a light sports car feels like.

    Toyota GR Corolla

    300 Horsepower

2026 Toyota GR Corolla from the front three-quarter angleToyota

One of the most complete performance cars to come out of Japan recently is the Toyota GR Corolla, which is made super special by the engine. No, it doesn’t cross 500 horsepower, but getting 300 horsepower out of only three cylinders is incredibly cool, and you can hear the turbo working away. Pair that with configurable all-wheel-drive, and you have a road-going rally car.

With the automatic, Toyota has broadened the GR’s appeal, but the slick three-pedaled version is the one we’d choose. Thanks to its dimensions and grip, it’ll probably beat most dedicated sports cars at real-world speed on public roads. You’ll be able to use a lot more of the powerband under the limit.

    Mini Cooper JCW

    228 Horsepower

2025 Mini John Cooper Works (JCW) HardtopMini

The Mini Cooper JCW takes the best from BMW and Mini and sticks them into one fun package. Mini has always touted its lightweight and go-kart handling characteristics as a selling point, and it’s continued that even when cars get more complicated and heavy. Even if you only ever drive this in the city, the steering and 280 lb-ft of torque will make you feel like a racing driver.

228 horsepower works well with the short wheelbase, and the decals, aero bits, and racy interior mean that enjoyment doesn’t have to only be there when the engine is turned on. It looks fast without moving, and that’s fun. Even the interior screen can be configured with different wallpapers and themes to match any scenario from retro to sport.

    Hyundai Elantra N

    276 Horsepower

2023 Hyundai Elantra N on the roadHyundai

“In a world that constantly shows you lustworthy objects you can’t afford, the Elantra N proves that you can sometimes get what you want.”

    – Jared Rosenholtz, Former Editor-at-Large, CarBuzz

Four-cylinders have never sounded so good. While the facelift’s bark is slightly muted (someone was pulled over for noise in a pre-facelift car), the exhaust is still seriously characterful. And that adds to the fun — you might not be going superfast thanks to only 276 horsepower, you’ll sound like you’re in a supercar through the pops and crackles on the over-run. Hyundai has become masterful at creating affordable fun — and the Elantra N undercuts many of its rivals.

    Jeep Wrangler

    285 Horsepower

2026 Jeep Wrangler Willys 392 Front ViewJeep

“There is so much suspension travel and tire sidewall that Wrangler owners will rarely need to mash the brakes over speed bumps.”

    – Jared Rosenholtz, Former Editor-at-Large, CarBuzz

While everyone slows down for speed bumps, you speed up before them. Fun comes in many ways, and that includes pointing at the horizon and planting the gas. Torque is where the performance lies with the Jeep Wrangler, and that means it’s easier to make it over the trickiest of rocks and muddiest terrain. When you remove the doors and roof, and choose the two-door version, we’d argue that this is sometimes more fun than any car with double the power.
