The F 650 GS Dakar from the early 2000s remains a benchmark for what an accessible, genuinely capable adventure bike can be — the kind of machine that introduced a generation of riders to long-distance dirt travel before the segment exploded into what it is today. BMW returning to that territory, with a modern platform and the resources of the GS family behind it, would be a significant moment for the middleweight adventure market.

A new middleweight GS, priced between the F 450 GS and F 900 GS, would give BMW a genuine answer to all of them. One estimate places the India price around 1.2 million rupees (roughly $12,500 USD), though that figure carries no manufacturer backing. What’s clear is that BMW’s intent is to compete on capability first — the 21-inch front wheel, long-travel suspension, and F 900 GS-derived braking all point to a machine that takes off-road performance seriously rather than treating it as a styling exercise.
A production launch is not expected before 2028, and the unfinished state of the prototype confirms there’s significant development work still ahead.
