Porsche seems to understand the distinction, which is why the 2027 Porsche 911 Carrera S is getting something enthusiasts have been asking for since the updated 992.2 generation arrived: a six-speed manual transmission. Offered exclusively in North America through a new MT Package, the stick-shift Carrera S combines 473 horsepower with three pedals, rear-wheel drive, and a specification that sounds purpose-built for drivers who would rather change gears themselves.
The Carrera S has always occupied a particularly appealing spot in the 911 family. It sits above the standard Carrera without wandering into the price and intensity of a GT3, offering enough additional performance to feel special while remaining a car you could realistically drive every day. Until now, however, the current Carrera S was paired exclusively with Porsche’s excellent eight-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission. PDK is remarkably quick and hard to fault from a performance standpoint, but shaving tenths from an acceleration run does not necessarily make a Sunday morning drive more memorable.
Porsche’s new MT Package changes the personality of the Carrera S considerably. Its 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged flat-six sends 473 horsepower to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual shared with the Carrera T. Porsche also includes rear-axle steering, the Sport Chrono Package, PASM Sport suspension that lowers the car by 10 mm, centerlock wheels, SportDesign bodywork, and a unique exhaust calibration. Those centerlock wheels are not just for appearance either, as Porsche says they save more than 17 pounds compared with the regular Carrera S wheel setup.
The result is a Carrera S that weighs a claimed 3,327 pounds, just 11 pounds more than a Carrera T coupe while bringing considerably more power to the party. Porsche even gives the manual car a walnut shift knob, one of those wonderfully unnecessary details that somehow feels exactly right in a 911 focused on driver involvement. Buyers who want to keep going can add Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes, carbon-fiber bucket seats, Paint to Sample finishes, and a huge selection of interior combinations. There are even optional puddle lights that project the six-speed shift pattern onto the pavement, just in case anyone nearby needs confirmation that you chose the correct transmission.
Of course, this particular celebration of analog driving requires a healthy bank account. The 2027 911 Carrera S with MT Package starts at $167,100 for the coupe and $181,000 for the Cabriolet before Porsche’s $2,350 delivery, processing, and handling charge. That effectively puts the starting figures at $169,450 and $183,350, respectively, before options, taxes, registration, or the inevitable damage caused by spending too much time in Porsche’s configurator. It is not cheap, but it remains well below the loftier reaches of the 911 GT3 family while offering substantially more punch and personalization potential than the Carrera T.
At this point, Porsche increasingly seems to be leading the front when it comes to keeping the manual transmission alive in serious modern performance cars, even if buyers have to pay quite a bit of money for admission. The company now offers conventional manuals across several 911 variants in North America, ranging from the Carrera T to the GT3 family and now the Carrera S. That is particularly notable at a time when many automakers are steadily eliminating clutch pedals in favor of faster automatics, electrified drivetrains, and increasingly computerized performance. Porsche itself helped push dual-clutch technology forward, yet it continues to acknowledge that the fastest transmission is not automatically the most enjoyable one.
That is ultimately what makes the 2027 Porsche 911 Carrera S with the MT Package so appealing. It is not pretending the manual will outrun PDK, because it probably will not. Instead, Porsche is giving enthusiasts the opportunity to trade a little outright speed for more involvement, something that has always mattered in a great sports car. With 473 horsepower, rear-wheel drive, a proper six-speed gearbox, and enough everyday civility to remain a genuine 911 Carrera, this could be the sweet-spot model many Porsche enthusiasts have been waiting for. Expensive sweet spot, yes, but a sweet spot nonetheless.
