Kia Is Determined To Get Its K5 Sedan Out Of The Toyota Camry’s Shadow

Kia’s midsize sedan offering isn’t going anywhere. The CarBuzz spy photographers have just captured a refreshed version of the Kia K5 in the southwestern US. It’s touring Arizona and Nevada to endure the punishing summer desert temperatures as part of the car’s development process, making sure that nothing will melt or become unusable when it gets hot outside.

A second facelift shows that the K5 is going to be around for at least a few more years, ensuring that sedan buyers still have at least one choice as everyone else bails.

The Kia K5 sedan first went on sale in the US in 2020. Kia decided that the Optima name it had been using for 20 years wasn’t working anymore, so it went with the emotive and descriptive new name. The car was updated for model year 2025, adding new lights and a new base engine.

This time around, it looks like the K5 will be getting more than just new headlights. Kia, along with Hyundai and Genesis, always goes all-in on the camouflage for even the smallest changes, but there are real differences here.

The front bumper is all-new. We can see that the entire grille shape has been changed, and the car has lost the Tiger Nose bump from the bottom of the opening. The front splitter is more prominent, and the headlight shape is brand-new.

Changes at the back are harder to see, but still extensive. The spoiler stands out in black plastic instead of paint, the license plate surround has been reworked, and the lighting signature is new.

But this K5 prototype is also showing signs of some serious mechanical differences, or at least a new trim grade. Take a look at the front fenders. They’re completely new, which is unusual for any car that is just getting a facelift. Normally, changes are limited to lights and bumpers to keep costs down, but Kia has added an entire vent along the trailing edge.

To go with the new fender vent, the side skirts and lower body garnish are new. This Kia even seems to have wider fenders. That said, the wheel and tire package is the same as the current GT-Line and EX models, so the vent could be just a cosmetic change rather than a more aggressive GT model.

Thanks to the car sitting in a hotel parking lot, we can see inside as well. The prototypes have a new seat cover design that hints this is an EX-trim car, and the door panels are a different shape and design from the old ones.

The dashboard is also new. Yes, most of it is hidden, but some changes aren’t under wraps. The front of the dash loses its trim panel that ran from door to door, replaced by a large flat panel. This is a hint that the screens and even climate controls will also be new. The Hyundai Group’s Pleos system with its single large screen is the likely replacement.

CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:

With fewer customers and fewer competitors, it’s easy to keep pumping out the same sedan year after year. But while Kia’s platform is aging – as are the Camry and Accord – the brand is clearly still looking to compete rather than just show up.

The 2025 Kia K5 was revealed in 2024. If the brand follows its typical product cycles, this one should arrive sometime next year as a 2028 model year vehicle.
