Federal government invests in EV charging infrastructure and education projects

The federal government is investing $10.9 million in electric vehicle infrastructure and education projects across Canada as part of efforts to expand access to charging and support vehicle electrification.

Environment, Climate Change and Nature Minister Julie Dabrusin announced funding for 22 projects, including nearly $9 million to install almost 400 electric vehicle chargers through nine projects funded by the Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program.

An additional $2 million will support 13 education and awareness projects aimed at increasing familiarity with electric vehicles and charging options.

The government said the investments will help Canadians transition to electric transportation while supporting broader efforts to reduce emissions and strengthen Canada’s clean energy economy.

In British Columbia, the funding builds on recent growth in electric vehicle adoption and infrastructure development. The province now has more than 8,900 public charging ports, an increase of 87 per cent since 2023, according to the government.

The government said Canada’s clean electricity grid provides an advantage as it expands its electric vehicle charging network and works to support innovation, economic growth and competitiveness in the clean energy sector.

“Driving electric can save a Canadian household between $23,000 and $32,000 over 10 years, but for the nearly one in three Canadian families who live in condominiums, stratas and apartments, those savings can be out of reach,” said Travis Allan, president and chief executive officer, Canadian Charging Infrastructure Council. “Every day, condo boards, property managers and landlords ask our members the same question: What do we do when a resident wants to install electric vehicle charging? This guide, funded by the Government of Canada, will give them clear, practical answers and help ensure the benefits of low-cost electric driving reach every Canadian, not just those with a driveway.”

The federal government said the investments are part of its broader strategy to position Canada as a global leader in vehicle electrification and battery supply chains, while supporting the future of the country’s automotive sector.
