Toyota is recalling about 508,000 examples of the 2025 and 2026 Camry Hybrid in the U.S. because a software problem can cause the digital instrument cluster to remain completely blank when the car is started. The issue affects Camrys equipped with the 7-inch combination meter and is more serious than simply losing sight of the speedometer. If the malfunction occurs, the vehicle can also lose functioning turn signals, hazard lights and several warning alerts, creating a legitimate safety concern for both the driver and surrounding traffic.

According to Toyota’s recall filing, an error can occur during the instrument cluster’s startup sequence, preventing the display from initializing properly. When that happens, drivers can lose access to important information displayed in the gauge panel, while certain warning buzzers may also stop working. Those include the driver and passenger seatbelt reminders and the warning for a key left in the vehicle. More concerning is that the same fault can prevent the exterior turn signals and hazard lights from operating, potentially leaving other motorists unaware that the Camry driver intends to turn, change lanes or signal an emergency.

Toyota began receiving reports of blank instrument clusters in 2024, but the problem proved difficult to reproduce during early testing. Engineers and the component supplier continued investigating the issue, eventually recreating the failure and tracing it to a software initialization problem. By late July 2026, Toyota had confirmed that the malfunction could occur in an actual vehicle and could also affect the turn signals, hazard lights and warning sounds. The automaker subsequently determined that the affected Camrys may fail to comply with several federal motor vehicle safety standards and initiated the recall.

The good news for owners is that the remedy does not require replacing the entire instrument panel. Toyota dealers will update the combination meter software at no charge. Owner notifications are scheduled to begin in late September, with all affected owners expected to be contacted by October 5, 2026. Camry owners do not necessarily need to wait for a letter to investigate further, as they can check their vehicle’s VIN through Toyota’s recall lookup system or the NHTSA recall database to determine whether their car is included.
