Few cars have as stellar of a reputation for quality and reliability than the Toyota Camry. It’s in its ninth generation, and its sterling record of dependability, combined with strong value and driving dynamics, has helped it be one of the best-selling cars in America. No car is ever truly perfect, though, and a technical glitch has affected more than a half million of the latest hybrid sedan.

The Instrument Cluster Might Not Work
The recall includes a total of 508,354 current-generation Toyota Camrys built from August 15, 2024, to June 9, 2026. It also only affects lower-trim versions of the Camry, such as SE and LE, that have the smaller 7-inch instrument display. If you have a Camry with the larger 12.3-inch instrument display, such as the XSE and XLE trims, this recall won’t apply to your car. As such, this batch of recalled cars doesn’t make up the entire current-generation Camry production run, but it’s still an enormous chunk of it.
The issue is one that seems to be increasingly common with modern cars: a software issue. Apparently, it’s possible in specific circumstances for the 7-inch instrument screen to not turn on at startup. That’s bad enough for not displaying information such as speed, but the glitch would also, simultaneously, disable the turn signals and some warning chimes. All of these functions are, of course, legally required to be operational, but they’re also critical to being able to drive the car safely, whether that’s following the speed limit or signaling a turn, lane change, or needing to turn on the hazard lights.
According to recall documentation, Toyota started receiving reports of the issue in July 2024, and it started collecting parts that were confirmed to have issues and started testing them, but wasn’t able to recreate the issue. It wasn’t until last October that Toyota and its supplier were starting to have success in recreating the issue, and seemed to finally have the exact problem pinned down a couple of months ago.
It’s Update Time
Since this instrumentation issue is caused by software, the solution to it is also software. Toyota has an update that should fix the glitch. Unfortunately, owners won’t be able to implement it at home thanks to over-the-air updating. They’ll have to take their Camrys to the dealership for a technician to install the update. It will be installed at no cost, and since it’s just some software, it hopefully will mean that the dealer visit will be short.

Toyota did not say that owners shouldn’t drive affected vehicles, so you also don’t need to worry about having the car parked while waiting for a dealer appointment. Dealers have already been informed about the recall, so owners should be able to call the dealer and set up that appointment without any issues. Owner notificiation letters will be sent out in about a month.
