    • Nio’s 2 premium SUVs account for nearly half of group deliveries.
    • Nio brand’s older models continued to shrink, with the ET5 Touring delivering 1,561 units and the ES6 just 875.

Nio Inc (NYSE: NIO) saw its July deliveries become increasingly concentrated in 2 large premium sport utility vehicles (SUVs).

The ES8 and ES9 delivered a combined 16,603 units, accounting for 83% of the main Nio brand’s 20,008 deliveries and 46% of Nio Inc’s overall 35,934 deliveries, according to China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) data compiled by CnEVPost.

The ES8 delivered 10,288 units in July, returning above the 10,000-unit monthly mark and rising 14.7% from 8,969 in June.

Nio had previously disclosed a figure of 10,286 units on Weibo, a minor difference of 2 units from the CPCA data.

The rebound was driven by the 5-seat version. The variant was launched on July 9 and deliveries began the following day, unleashing previously pent-up demand.

The 5-seat version starts at 382,800 yuan ($56,390) including the battery pack, 5.9% lower than the 3-row version. Under Nio’s BaaS (battery as a service) plan, the starting price drops to 274,800 yuan.

The ES9 delivered 6,315 units in July, down 26.5% from 8,595 in June. The executive flagship was launched on May 27 with a starting price of 498,000 yuan.

Despite the month-on-month decline, the ES9’s delivery pace remains strong. The model reached its 20,000th delivery on August 8, just 73 days after initial deliveries began, while the current waiting time for higher-spec versions is 13 to 14 weeks.

The strength of the 2 new SUVs highlights the contraction of Nio’s older models. The ES6 SUV delivered 875 units in July, down 28% from June, while the EC6 delivered 356.

Exports remained limited, totaling 92 units in July, compared with 72 in June.

Higher-priced models are helping improve the company’s financial position. The main Nio brand had an average transaction price of 434,600 yuan in July, equivalent to about 8.7 billion yuan in revenue based on delivery volume.

Deutsche Bank expects Nio to achieve non-GAAP break-even in the second quarter, helped by a greater contribution from higher-margin models.

Cost pressures, however, are beginning to emerge. Founder, chairman and CEO William Li said on July 10 that rising raw-material prices had increased the cost of each ES8 by nearly 20,000 yuan.

He said the company was working with supply-chain partners to offset some of the increase in an effort to keep prices stable.

In the first 7 months of the year, cumulative ES8 deliveries reached 88,947 units, up more than 20-fold from a year earlier. Nio Inc delivered 227,057 vehicles over the period, up 68% year-on-year.

Nio Inc delivered 227,057 vehicles in the first seven months of the year, up 67.98% year-on-year.
