    • The GAC Aion Ray 7 measures 4,960 mm in length and features a low-slung, wide-body stance with a fastback profile.
    • The model uses a motor supplied by Huawei, while its batteries come from CATL and GAC Aion’s battery unit.

GAC Aion, the electric vehicle brand of GAC (HKEX: 2238), has filed for the Ray 7 in China, paving the way for the launch of the first model in its new Ray series.

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) included the Ray 7, a battery electric sedan, in its latest batch of new vehicle filings released on Friday.

The 5-seat sedan measures 4,960 mm in length, 1,900 mm in width and 1,455 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,920 mm.

Regulatory images show the model with a low-slung, wide-body stance and a fastback profile, as well as a closed-off front fascia.

The Ray 7 is powered by a permanent-magnet synchronous motor supplied by Huawei, with a peak output of 180 kW, or 241 hp.

The vehicle has a curb weight of either 1,720 kg or 1,855 kg and a top speed of 180 km/h.

The two versions filed for approval use lithium iron phosphate batteries, but from different suppliers. One uses battery cells from CATL (HKEX: 3750), while the other is equipped with batteries supplied by Yinpai Battery, GAC Aion’s battery unit.

Optional equipment includes roof-mounted LiDAR, fender cameras, multiple wheel designs and brake caliper colors, as well as a “Ray 01” rear badge. Some versions can be configured without the roof-mounted LiDAR and fender cameras.

GAC Aion unveiled the Ray series on July 28, saying its first model would be called the Ray 7 and positioning it as a “super electric sedan loved by young people.”

The model will be the first to use GAC Aion’s new logo and will feature what the company calls a “super chassis,” which it says uses the world’s first chip-level integrated drive-and-control architecture.

GAC Aion previously said the Ray 7’s driver-assistance system would use a LiDAR-based solution and algorithms derived from the same technology used for Level 4 autonomous driving.

The company has yet to disclose the Ray 7’s pricing, driving range or launch timing.

The new series comes as GAC Aion’s sales rebound. The brand sold 28,807 vehicles in July, up 36.37% from a year earlier, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

GAC Aion sold 210,386 vehicles in the first 7 months of the year, up 62.08% year-on-year, reversing the weakness seen in 2025, when its full-year sales fell 22.62%.

The first model in GAC Aion’s Ray series is a mid to large-size electric sedan aimed at young buyers.
