The Chevrolet Camaro may be coming back, but not exactly in the way traditionalists expected. According to a report from GM Authority, the next-generation Camaro is now expected to arrive for the 2029 model year, later than earlier rumors suggested. The bigger twist is that the revived Camaro will reportedly move to a four-door layout for the first time, giving Chevrolet a very different answer to the Ford Mustang and Dodge Charger.

The idea of a four-door Camaro will probably split the fanbase immediately. For decades, the Camaro has been a two-door pony car defined by long-hood proportions, rear-wheel drive, and a direct rivalry with the Mustang. But the market has changed, and Dodge has already stretched the modern Charger lineup across two-door and four-door versions. If Chevrolet wants the Camaro name to survive with broader appeal, a sport sedan shape could make more business sense than another low-volume coupe.

The reported good news is that the new Camaro is still expected to ride on GM’s Alpha 2 architecture, an updated version of the platform that underpinned the previous Camaro along with the Cadillac CT4 and CT5. That should mean rear-wheel drive remains part of the formula, which is critical if Chevrolet wants enthusiasts to take the car seriously. GM Authority has also reported that the next Camaro is expected to offer more than one transmission choice, including a manual, which would be a major win in a market where stick-shift performance cars keep disappearing.

Powertrain details are not confirmed yet, but the report points to multiple engine options and a high-performance variant. A turbocharged four-cylinder would not be surprising for a lower trim, especially since GM has already paired turbo power with the Alpha platform in other models. The enthusiast model is expected to bring V8 power, likely tied to GM’s latest small-block family, which would give the new Camaro something the four-door Dodge Charger currently does not offer: a V8, rear-wheel-drive performance sedan with a manual transmission possibility.

Production is expected to take place at GM’s Lansing Grand River Assembly plant in Michigan, the same facility tied to the previous Camaro and future Alpha-based GM products. The delay to 2029 means there is still time for details to change, and Chevrolet has not officially confirmed the final formula. Still, if this report holds, the next Camaro will not simply be a revival. It will be a reinvention, one that trades the classic coupe shape for more daily usability while trying to keep the rear-drive, performance-focused spirit that made the name matter in the first place.
