Ford’s upcoming affordable electric pickup finally has a name, and it is not Ranchero. The new truck will be called the Ford Fathom, and it is set to become the first model built on the company’s new Universal EV platform. More importantly, Ford says the Fathom will start at $29,945, including destination, putting it just under the $30,000 mark and even slightly below the base price of a 2026 Maverick. In a market where EVs often feel priced out of reach for everyday buyers, that number is the headline.
Ford says it spent months choosing the name, eventually landing on Fathom instead of reviving a historic badge like Ranchero. The word has a nautical meaning as a unit of depth, but it also means to understand something after deeper thought. That gives Ford a little room to position the truck as more than a simple work appliance. Marketing language aside, the real test will be whether buyers see Fathom as a clever new name or just wonder why Ford did not lean into one of its familiar truck-related badges.
The Fathom will ride on Ford’s Universal EV architecture, a platform created specifically to lower costs, simplify production, and support a family of more affordable electric vehicles. Ford has already said the midsize electric truck will be assembled at its Louisville Assembly Plant and reach customers in 2027. Preorders are scheduled to open in early 2027, which means the full reveal should not be too far away. The starting price applies to the standard-range battery, strongly suggesting that a longer-range version will be offered for buyers willing to spend more.
Ford is also promising useful tech, not just a stripped-down price-leader EV. The Fathom will seat five and is said to offer more passenger space than a Toyota RAV4. It will feature a large touchscreen, digital key capability, a frunk, bidirectional power, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Every Fathom will also be capable of using BlueCruise hands-free driver assistance, although Ford has not yet detailed how subscription or activation pricing will work for this specific model.
The bigger picture is that Ford needs the Fathom to work. The company has taken heavy losses on early EV efforts, while lower-cost competition from China and startups has made affordability impossible to ignore. A compact or midsize electric pickup priced under $30,000 could give Ford a much stronger foothold with buyers who want truck utility without full-size truck cost or Lightning-level pricing. If the Fathom delivers real-world range, practical capability, and the kind of usability Ford truck buyers expect, it could become one of the most important EVs the Blue Oval has launched yet.
