Audi Wants More Wagons in America as Enthusiasts Keep the Long-Roof Dream Alive : Automotive Addicts

    Audi

Audi may be one of the last automakers still giving American wagon fans something to get excited about, and there could be more on the way. The brand currently offers the RS6 Avant and A6 Allroad in the U.S., with the next-generation A6 Allroad also expected to make its way here. In a market still dominated by SUVs, Audi appears to understand that wagons serve a very specific buyer, one who wants utility, performance, and style without defaulting to another crossover.

Speaking with Road & Track, Filip Brabec, senior vice president of product management at Audi of America, made it clear that wagons still matter to the brand’s identity. Brabec said Audi does not want to be a “vanilla brand” with only a few SUVs and sedans, adding that the company wants to offer something for enthusiasts and continue looking at which wagon models could make sense for the U.S. market. That is exactly the kind of thing long-roof loyalists want to hear, especially after years of watching Europe enjoy the best Avant models from afar.

Audi has a strong wagon history in America, even if the lineup has thinned over time. The A4 Avant left the U.S. after 2012, the A4 Allroad carried the compact wagon torch until production ended in 2024, and older S4 and S6 Avant models remain cult favorites among enthusiasts. Today, the RS6 Avant represents the dream-machine side of Audi’s wagon story, while the A6 Allroad fills the lifted, all-weather, premium-family role that Audi has managed to keep alive better than most.

The business case still matters, of course. Wagons are not volume sellers in the U.S., and every model must justify the cost of certification, marketing, dealer support, and inventory planning. Brabec acknowledged that Audi has to make the numbers work, but he also pointed out that wagons are a strength with customers who understand them. That is the key distinction. Audi does not need every buyer to choose a wagon. It only needs enough passionate, loyal buyers in the right regions to make the case.

One of the more interesting regions is New York City. Brabec told Road & Track that the Allroad has long been popular in Manhattan because it offers much of the space and ride height people like in an SUV without always triggering the same oversized-vehicle garage fees. In a city where monthly parking can already cost an absurd amount, saving extra fees by driving something classified more like a passenger car becomes a real advantage. For urban owners, a wagon can be more than an enthusiast choice. It can be a clever ownership hack.

That practicality is exactly why wagons deserve another look. They drive more like cars, offer useful cargo space, handle bad weather well when equipped with all-wheel drive, and avoid some of the bulk that comes with larger SUVs. For automotive enthusiasts, they also carry a certain understated cool that crossovers often miss. If Audi does find room to bring more Avants and Allroads to the U.S., it would not just be filling a niche. It would be rewarding the buyers who still believe the best family car might have a long roof, a low stance, and four rings on the grille.
