‘From Every Single Point Of View, This Is A Real Ferrari’

It’s safe to say that the Ferrari Luce is the most controversial car to come out of 2026 so far, and maybe even the entire decade. When it was launched, comments started rushing in to accuse the company of losing its soul, craftsmanship, and how it wasn’t worthy of the badge. Ferrari has had to defend its new design language vehemently, and when CarBuzz got some time with the Luce at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the world’s most famous car manufacturer couldn’t wait to tell us all about it.

Under The Skin, It’s Designed Like Any Other Ferrari

Enzo Ferrari famously hated the people who bought his road cars and used that side of the business purely as a way to pay for his racing efforts. While it may not be that extreme now that il Commendatore is no longer with us, racing still informs a lot of the decisions made at the company, and the Luce has been designed to take motorsport technology to the road. Ferrari are famously successful at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and Formula 1, both of which use hybrid technology.

“From every single point of view, this is a real Ferrari,” Pietro Virgolin, global marketing manager at Ferrari, tells us. “The motor came from experience on the race side of the company, and that continues with the aerodynamics. The painted front part is a huge wing. It’s not a hood.” The company calls the body-colored part of the vehicle a ‘suit’ that the black cabin wears.

The electric motors, of which there is one on each wheel, are also a dream for engineers, claims Virgolin. “You can ask every single area of the car to do exactly what you want without any problems,” he says. This also works in tandem with an active suspension setup. Even though there may not be a screaming V12 in the front, the Luce has been created with all the same racing DNA as its other vehicles.

‘A Car That You Can Enjoy With Friends’

One of the biggest controversies about the latest Ferrari is the fact it has five seats, the first Ferrari ever to do so. When asked if the Luce feels a bit more ‘sensible’ than the company’s sports cars, Virgolin bluntly states: “At Ferrari, we only produce sports cars. But this one is a car that you can enjoy also with friends.” That’s pretty bold for a car that looks like this, but he mentioned that the stats speak for themselves.

“It has the same figures as a hypercar. It can go from 0–120 mph in 6.7 seconds, like a hypercar. But a short wheelbase and low center of gravity make it like a typical Ferrari Berlinetta.”

    – Pietro Virgolin, Global Marketing Manager, Ferrari

Just like any other Ferrari, the company has looked at how to extend the vehicle’s lifespan. The Modena-based manufacturer is very proud of the fact that over 90% of its cars built are still on the road today, and as new battery technology is developed and improved upon, owners will be able to swap their outdated batteries for newer, better ones. “This car should be driven forever, as with every Ferrari,” Virgolin explains.

CarBuzz Insight — Why This Matters

It was inevitable that Ferrari was going to build an electric vehicle at some point, whether due to legislative reasons or market demand, but no one expected it to create a stir quite like this. Breaking into a new segment is a daunting moment for any manufacturer, but companies like Rolls-Royce have been able to take on the challenge and succeed. At the Festival of Speed, it seems like Ferrari’s smooth-talking salespeople were even able to convince clients to buy their cars at the event, as the brand claims the first year of production is now completely sold out.

What many online don’t understand, according to the company, is that a Ferrari is more than just the engine that it’s powered by. The ethos is built through racing-derived technology, a pursuit for future-proofing, and performance. The company has rejected the idea of simulated gearshifts, though. “We give Ferrari owners the possibility to have a car that is electric but is also driven like a Ferrari,” Virgolin says. “It’s about how you feel when you drive it.”
