Genesis Responds To Performance Beyond Magma

Added an official comment from Genesis regarding Magma and the future for performance vehicles from the luxury brand.

Genesis finally launched its first globally-available model in its high-performance range with the GV60 Magma. It’s great to drive, and it’s just the start of what should be a rather full selection of sporty Genesis models. Magma may not be the endpoint for the Genesis expedition into performance cars, as some Australian executives left the door open for even more special vehicles.

They Didn’t Say “No,” But They Didn’t Say “Yes”

The executives were Head of Genesis Motors Australia Justin Douglass, and Tim Rodgers, a product manager for Hyundai, and they spoke with a reporter from Australia’s Carsales.com.au. When asked about the possibility of some kind of limited-edition and more intense vehicles above the regular Magma offerings, neither would confirm anything. However, they didn’t rule out the possibility and emphasized how Genesis has lots of ambition and a desire to expand into new product areas.

    The Ambition Is Clear

There’s no denying that Genesis has serious ambition. The last few years have been packed for the brand. It just competed at the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the first time, and it managed to finish the race. Plus, it accomplished that with a program that only formed a year and a half beforehand. Genesis is also developing a mid-engine sports car that will further the brand’s motorsport plans as the basis for a GT3-class race car. In more mainstream segments, Genesis is adding a flagship SUV with coach doors, and it may even introduce something smaller than the GV60.

On top of all this, Genesis has arguably already made an ultra-special Magma model, it just didn’t have a unique designation to go with it. In the Middle East, Genesis sold just 20 examples of the G80 Magma, and only in that region. It was dramatically more powerful than the standard G80 with 525 horsepower, and it had some unique styling cues such as some distinct vents in the hood. The point of all this is that, we have no doubt that Genesis could easily create an exclusive level of performance cars on top of its Magma range if it wants to.

    Would It Make Sense, Though?

While we won’t question the ability of Genesis to do something like this, we would question how wise it would be. Right now, Genesis is working hard on building up the Magma brand, and it has loads of growing to do. As we already touched on, the first globally-available model only just launched. Aside from needing some time for people to become aware of the car and the brand, there’s so much opportunity to add more Magma models across body styles and powertrains.

Trying to one-up its fledgling sub-brand so early in its life could even be counterproductive. Why would you buy that GV60 Magma if you knew that in a year or so, the company was going to release an even cooler version that you might’ve also been able to afford? Just wait for the better one.

We suspect that Genesis may also understand that building Magma first makes the most sense. The sports car it previewed last year is simply called the Magma GT. Something that surprising and exotic would’ve been worthy of a fancy suffix to the Magma name, but it has the same name that’s affixed to the GV60. As a result, it bolsters the reputation of Magma as a whole, rather than stratifying it and making regular Magma look less exciting.

Genesis Responds To Performance Beyond Magma

CarBuzz contacted Genesis for more information about the possibility of models that eclipse the performance metrics set by Magma. A spokesperson left the question open-ended and provided the following comment:

“While we can’t comment on future product plans, we’re excited about the future of the Genesis brand and look forward to introducing GV60 Magma, our first Magma production model, to U.S. customers very soon.”

CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:

Whether Genesis creates a more exclusive Magma line or not, the company will definitely be exciting to follow in the next few years. Besides the launch of a performance division, racing division, and introduction of more mainstream automobiles, it has been experimenting with some dramatic concepts from grand tourers to off-road SUVs. The brand doesn’t seem to rule out anything, and what it does execute is done with quality and competence to make any establishment brand concerned. We can’t wait to see what comes next.
