Dodge is preparing something big for the next era of SRT, and the rumored 2029 Copperhead may be the halo car that puts the performance division fully back in the spotlight. Reviving a name first seen on a late-1990s Dodge concept, the Copperhead is expected to sit above the Charger as a more focused, more advanced performance machine. Dodge has been clear that this is not a direct Viper replacement, but it appears ready to serve a similar purpose: giving the brand a dramatic, aspirational flagship that reminds everyone SRT still knows how to build something outrageous.
The timing matters because Dodge is trying to rebuild its performance identity in a very different market. The current Charger lineup has plenty of power, especially in Daytona EV form and upcoming higher-output gas variants, but it remains a large muscle car at heart. The Copperhead is expected to be smaller, lower, sharper, and more track-focused, giving Dodge something that can stand apart from traditional muscle while still keeping the brand’s attitude intact. Tim Kuniskis has referred to it as a “hyper-muscle car,” which may be the clearest clue that Dodge is not chasing the Corvette directly, but trying to create its own lane.
The platform remains one of the biggest mysteries. A full-scale model reportedly shown during Stellantis’ Investor Day looked somewhat Charger-like at first glance, but Kuniskis later made it clear on The Drive’s podcast that the Copperhead is not based on the Charger’s STLA Large architecture. He suggested there are global synergies involved, which opens the door to plenty of speculation. One possibility is some relationship to Maserati or Alfa Romeo hardware, perhaps using elements of the Giorgio family that underpins cars like the Maserati GranTurismo and Alfa Romeo Giulia. That would give Dodge a rear-drive-friendly foundation with the proportions needed for a serious low-slung performance car.
Styling is expected to be aggressive in proper SRT fashion. Reports describe a blacked-out front end packed with vents, a hood treatment that blends the Charger Daytona’s R-wing aero concept with a more traditional muscle-car scoop, a deep front splitter, brake-cooling vents behind the front wheels, and a large rear wing that sounds inspired by the old Viper ACR. That mix of aero and attitude is exactly what the Copperhead needs if it is going to feel like more than another nostalgic badge revival.

The powertrain question may decide how enthusiasts receive the car. A V10 comeback would be the dream, but that seems unlikely given emissions realities and Dodge’s insistence that this is not simply the new Viper. A supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V8 would make plenty of sense emotionally, especially with Ram already bringing V8 performance back into the spotlight. At the same time, Kuniskis has hinted that the engine could be something new or something not publicly known yet, which leaves room for a surprise. A hybrid setup seems less likely based on his comments about long-term collectability and timelessness, but nothing is official yet.
Competition will be unavoidable even if Dodge says it is not targeting the Corvette directly. The Chevrolet Corvette Z06, upcoming Corvette Grand Sport X, Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC, and whatever Chevrolet eventually does with the Camaro name will all occupy the same mental space for performance buyers. Dodge will need the Copperhead to feel different enough to justify itself, especially if pricing starts above $100,000 and climbs higher with options or specialty trims. That means it cannot just be fast. It needs to feel special, raw, emotional, and unmistakably Dodge.
If the Copperhead arrives around the 2029 model year as expected, it could become the most important SRT product in years. The risk is real, especially around engine choice, pricing, and whether Dodge can balance modern performance technology with the old-school emotion its fans expect. But the opportunity is just as big. Done right, the Copperhead could be the car that proves Dodge still has room for a wild, combustion-powered halo machine in a world increasingly dominated by EVs, hybrids, and heavy performance SUVs.
