Ferrari’s Flagship Hypercar Is Getting 100% More Headroom

A couple of months ago, we came across a flurry of Ferrari trademarks, and a few of them were related to the most furious horse in the stable, the F80. They indicated that two variants are on the way, one an FXX track-only special, and the other a open-top version. Thanks to an Instagram user, we’re getting our first look at the latter, which we expect will be the first to be revealed.

Ferrari Is Hiding The Important Part

You can see this F80 prototype below. Derek Cornelissan caught it out and about and shared it on his Instagram account where he posts the test cars he spots near Maranello, Italy. The giveaway that it’s a convertible is the curious bit of bodywork added to the roof. Ferrari seems to have fitted a cap to this car purely to hide what’s happening with the top. It does draw attention, but it does the job of hiding its final design.

Unsurprisingly, the open-top section of the F80 is quite small, which is typical of most mid-engine sports cars, including past flagship Ferraris. What’s interesting is that the engine cover section (and, really, the whole rest of the car) looks basically unchanged from the standard F80. We sometimes see some minor changes to these areas on other mid-engine drop-tops to accommodate storage of the top and its mechanisms when retracted. As such, it’s quite possible that Ferrari will use a manually removable Targa-style roof, rather than some sort of folding soft top.

What Else To Expect From This F80

We have a few possibilities for what this F80 will be called. Ferrari trademarked F80 Targa and F80 Roadster, though the company has used an array of names for its convertible models. Before those, though, Ferrari also trademarked F80 Aperta, which is Italian for “open.” The last Ferrari flagship convertible used Aperta to highlight its removable roof, so that might be the most likely name, but any of them are plausible.

The lack of changes besides the roof indicates that the convertible will have basically the exact same specifications as the hardtop. That means it will have the same twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 with three electric motors making a total of 1,184 horsepower. The coupe gets to 62 mph in just 2.15 seconds and has a top speed of 217 mph. The convertible will likely be a fraction of a second slower to 62, and may have a slightly lower top speed. It will probably be slightly heavier, too.

We probably won’t have too long to wait for the official reveal, likely about a year or so. The prototype doesn’t look terribly far from being production-ready. We’re also confident in saying that it will be sold in a limited quantity similar to the coupe, and the price will likely be a bit higher than the coupe’s $3.23 million tag. We wouldn’t be surprised if Ferrari has already sold all of them, too.

CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:

The F80 convertible is part of the typical Ferrari supercar life cycle, and really most supercar life cycles. A few years after the main model launched, this will give some wealthy buyers another opportunity at having any top-tier Ferrari, or some extra special customers to complement their existing F80 coupe. Even though supercars of various levels follow this release pattern, flagships like the F80 don’t always get an open-top variant unless it had it from the start, such as the Porsche Carrera GT and 918 Spyder. So the F80 convertible will have an extra level of novelty in the space.
