Vancouver Community College is introducing a new suite of automotive training programs aimed at preparing technicians for the growing number of hybrid and electric vehicles entering B.C.’s vehicle parc.

Developed in partnership with industry, the programs are designed to help address a shortage of technicians trained to work on zero-emission vehicles as British Columbia continues its transition toward cleaner transportation.

The launch comes as the provincial government pursues targets under its Zero-Emission Vehicles Act that will see a growing share of vehicle sales shift to electric models over the coming years. VCC says the new programs will help supply the skilled workforce needed to support that transition while assisting automotive service centres facing increased demand for EV-qualified technicians.

“Now is an exciting time to be working in the automotive industry as we’re seeing a huge expansion in the roles and skills needed within the field,” said Brett Griffiths, dean of trades, technology and design at VCC. “VCC partnered closely with industry to develop these programs.”

The curriculum focuses on the technologies increasingly found in modern vehicles, including high-voltage battery systems, electric traction motors and evolving environmental standards. Students will also receive training related to parts sourcing and inventory management for both conventional and electrified vehicles.

The new offerings are designed for both newcomers to the industry and working professionals looking to upgrade their skills. In addition to a traditional diploma pathway, VCC is offering shorter microcredentials intended to provide targeted training in specialized areas.

    New programs include:

    • Automotive Electronics Repair certificate
    • Automotive Logistics and Service Operations – Zero Emissions diploma
    • Electric Vehicle Conversion microcredential
    • Zero Emissions Vehicle Service and Technology microcredential

VCC said the programs emphasize hands-on learning and opportunities to connect with industry employers, helping graduates transition more quickly into the workforce.

Intakes will be offered throughout the year, with many of the new programs beginning in September 2026.
