Like many performance manufacturers, Porsche enjoys pumping out some random special edition model every now and again. Considering how well they tend to sell, and how much collectors adore such creations, it’s not hard to see why the marque spends time thinking up its next project. Think the 911 Sport Classic, or perhaps the 911R, which took an already near-perfect recipe and went even further.
The year 2022 signified yet another Porsche special edition, the 911 Dakar. As hinted at by its name, this 911 was no track-eating weapon. Instead, this 911 was built to go extremely fast somewhere the others wouldn’t be able to get anywhere near it. As it turned out, Porsche had just built another collector’s favorite.
The 911 Dakar Celebrated Porsche’s Off-Road Heritage

After nearly 60 years on sale, Porsche would be forgiven for rather running out of ideas for special versions of its 911 sports car. It had made a track car, a turbocharged supercar, and even a 1950s-styled roadster out of it, but in 2022, it decided to explore a different avenue. Mouths were left agape at that year’s Los Angeles Auto Show when the 911 Dakar was unveiled. This radically different 911 sat much higher than a standard variant, and featured weird tires that you’d normally find strapped to something like a Jeep Wrangler.
Yep, the 911 Dakar was the first road-going 911 to be designed purely to boss any off-road trail you pointed its nose at. Porsche didn’t simply embark on such a task because its designers had partied too hard over the weekend, either, as the brand was instead celebrating its off-roading pedigree. Alongside its successful track racing exploits, Porsche found a fair amount of success in tarmac rallying. During the 1970s, the marque also entered the 911 into the East African Safari Rallye in an attempt to illustrate just how dependable the sports car was.
And then Group B arrived. Porsche elected to design a purpose-built Group B rally car, the 959, which would use four-wheel drive. While the brand was testing the prototype, six-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner Jacky Ickx pitched the idea of entering some Porsche 911s into the grueling Dakar Rally, machines that would be fitted with Porsche’s developmental 4WD setup. Porsche liked the idea, and three such machines were entered for the 1984 edition of the event. Thanks to its durability and poise, the 911 ended up winning overall in the hands of Ickx’s teammate Rene Metge.
Wanting an excuse to celebrate this amazing victory, Porsche greenlit the 911 Dakar project nearly 40 years after the event.
From $222k to $459k: How The 911 Dakar Doubled Its Value In Under Two Years

From the moment the 911 Dakar first broke cover, Porsche made it clear that it would be a limited-run special edition, rather than a mass-produced offering like the more standardized 911 range. As a result, as well as due to the specialist design of the Dakar, prospective owners had to hand over a commanding $222,000 to secure one. It’s always hard to know whether a car will rise in value before it has even reached the public, and off-road Porsches don’t have a great reputation for holding their worth. The Cayenne SUV tends to plunge in value as it ages, to the point where decent examples can be had for well under $10k these days.
One thing is for sure: history far from repeated itself. Just three years after the car went on sale, buyers need to pay well above its initial asking price to get one. Classic.com reports that the current average sale value for the 911 Dakar sits at $378,095, a $150K premium over its MSRP. Values are only continuing to rise, too. Take a bright yellow 2024 specimen offered through Grand Prix Motorcars as a clear example: the 2,000-miler is currently listed for $459,000. That figure is more than double the car’s original price.
Only 2,500 Were Built – But Rarity Alone Doesn’t Explain A $150k Premium

While the 911 Dakar is undoubtedly extreme, when you look at the details, the reasons for it becoming such a valuable used proposition become clear. First, with only 2,500 examples ever produced, it is one of the rarer 911 models available, which automatically confers extra value. Another key element that helps increase a vehicle’s worth is pedigree, and its celebration of the 1984 911 Dakar winner in terms of its design provides it with a level of cool that collectors love.
But then we come to arguably the most important ingredient of the 911 Dakar recipe: it actually works. Had it just been a standard 911 with a snorkel and a throwback livery, it likely would have been tossed onto the failed special edition scrapheap. But Porsche went further than that, as it developed the car to perform as well off-road as a normal 911 does on the road and track, a goal that it achieved emphatically. This gives it genuine value as a standout model, which does wonders for a car’s residual value. Alongside this, it’s also full of parts from other high-end Porsches, with a good example being the engine mounts from a 911 GT3.
Being the first road-going 911 of its type, the 911 Dakar will forever be known as the machine that introduced the public to the idea of a 911 that can embarrass dedicated off-roaders on their own turf.
The numbers tell one story. But behind the price tag is a machine that had to earn its reputation the hard way — starting with an entirely re-engineered suspension system that Porsche’s own engineers called the most complex 911 modification in the car’s history.
The 911 Dakar Was Designed To Get Dirty Without Complaining

When designing the 911 for off-road duty, the most important element was getting the car raised up. While retaining a similar multi-link independent suspension layout to the normal 911, longer spring struts were introduced to help increase ground clearance. The 911 Dakar’s new suspension allows it to sit a full two inches higher than a normal 911 Carrera, while an onboard lift system was employed to afford the car an extra inch of clearance when needed. The spring rates were also softened drastically to help improve the car’s traction and chassis articulation across uneven terrain.
Traction was further boosted by Porsche’s advanced all-wheel drive system, which helped keep the car moving thanks to a pair of new driving modes. Rallye mode functioned as something of an off-road sport mode, allowing extra wheel slippage for added driving excitement. Off-Road mode is more off-road focused: aside from raising the car to its maximum ride height, it can fully lock the car’s rear differential to enhance traction. The mode also closely monitors the level of power being sent to each wheel, and can change it to achieve optimal adhesion. A set of off-road Pirelli tires, which were specifically designed for the car, were also thrown in for the price of admission.
Porsche’s engineers also reinforced the underside of the 911 Dakar so it could be pushed hard without sustaining inconvenient and costly damage while its driver tested the car’s limits. Far from a badge-engineering exercise, the 911 Dakar is a proper off-road beast.
473 hp And A 3.2-sec 0-60: The Dakar That Forgot It Was An Off-Roader

While making the 911 Dakar effective off-road was Porsche’s primary target, it also wanted to retain the 911’s sporty DNA. To that end, the 911 Dakar is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter flat-six engine that puts 473 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque to its four tires.
An eight-speed PDK automatic transmission was also on hand, not only to give its driver less to think about while navigating off the beaten track, but also to enhance on-road performance. It was effective in this job, as the 911 Dakar could shoot through the 0-60 mph barrier in 3.2 seconds, despite rocking that unique off-road rubber.
Aside from simply softening and lengthening the standard 911 suspension to help preserve as much of the car’s agility as possible, the 911 Dakar was also treated to a four-wheel steering arrangement. By allowing the rear wheels to swivel in conjunction with the fronts, its turn-in response is much improved. This proves handy off-road too, as the car can navigate between tighter sections with ease. The vehicle also retains normal road-tuned driving modes like Sport, which slightly stiffens the suspension to deliver a sharper steering feel, as well as quicken up the throttle response.
The 911 Dakar was, and remains, a true multipurpose machine, and is arguably one of the most remarkable cars to emerge from Porsche’s Stuttgart factory. Combine that with the fact that the model’s average value has increased by nearly $100K in the last 12 months alone, and you shouldn’t expect the machine’s value to fall anytime soon.
It’s a shame the car is so expensive, as it’s hard to imagine a more thrilling afternoon than tackling a challenging off-road course in one. Or cutting donuts in a muddy field, for that matter.
