Nio Inc (NYSE: NIO) recorded retail sales of 20,736 vehicles in Shanghai in the first half of 2026, according to an article published Tuesday by a WeChat account affiliated with the government of Shanghai’s Jiading district.
The figure represented 10.88% of the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker’s total retail sales of 190,648 vehicles in China during the period, underscoring the importance of its birthplace to the company’s sales.
Nio Inc’s three brands — Nio, Onvo and Firefly — have delivered more than 150,000 vehicles in Shanghai to date. The milestone was reached on July 8.
Nio’s global headquarters is located in Shanghai’s Jiading district, while its manufacturing plants are in Hefei, Anhui province.
A concentrated push into the large SUV (sport utility vehicle) segment was a key factor supporting Nio’s performance in Shanghai, the article noted.
In the first half of 2026, the Nio brand’s ES8 and ES9 and the Onvo brand’s L80 and L90 captured a combined share of more than 60% of Shanghai’s large SUV market.
The ES8 has ranked as Shanghai’s top-selling large SUV for 8 consecutive months since deliveries began. Deliveries of its large 5-seat variant started on July 10.
The flagship ES9 surpassed 10,000 deliveries nationwide within 30 days of its launch. Cumulative deliveries of the model in Shanghai have exceeded 1,000 units.
In Shanghai’s SUV market priced above 300,000 yuan ($44,170), combined deliveries of the Nio ES6 and EC6 have surpassed 60,000 units.
The 2 models have ranked first in the segment since 2023, including both internal combustion engine vehicles and new energy vehicles (NEVs), according to the article.
In the premium sedan market, combined deliveries of the ET5 and ET5 Touring in Shanghai have exceeded 30,000 units.
The article also highlighted the synergies among Nio’s multiple brands. Cumulative deliveries of the Onvo L60 have surpassed 100,000 units since they began in September 2024, with more than one-third of buyers switching from or replacing vehicles from traditional luxury brands.
Firefly, Nio’s premium small-car brand, delivered 29,172 vehicles in the first half, up 271.9% year-on-year. The brand captured a share of more than 55% of China’s premium small-car market priced above 100,000 yuan, according to the article.
Sales growth has been accompanied by the expansion of Nio’s charging and battery swap network. Nio currently operates 214 battery swap stations in Shanghai, the most of any Chinese city, and has provided about 12.7 million battery swaps there cumulatively.
The project, when completed, will house 31 lithium battery testing laboratories, 1 lithium-ion cell pilot line and 1 battery pack line.
