McLaren may be preparing one of its most enthusiast-focused surprises in decades, if the latest rumor out of the supercar world proves true. According to TheSupercarBlog, the British automaker is reportedly working on a project known internally as the P50, and the headline detail is the one purists have been waiting to hear: a manual gearbox. McLaren has not confirmed the car, so this should be treated carefully for now, but the idea alone is enough to get the performance world buzzing.

The reason the rumor feels so big is simple. McLaren’s last road car with a traditional manual transmission was the legendary F1, produced from 1992 to 1998. That car still sits in rare air as one of the greatest driver’s cars ever built, and it remains the fastest naturally aspirated production car in history. Since then, every modern McLaren road car has relied on paddle-shifted dual-clutch transmissions, which are quicker and more efficient, but not nearly as emotionally involving as a clutch pedal and gated shift pattern.

    McLaren W1 Testing

The reported P50 comes at a time when ultra-high-end automakers are suddenly revisiting the idea of driver involvement. Ferrari has brought back a manual-style experience with the 12Cilindri Manuale, Hennessey is giving the Venom F5-M a true manual transmission, and Porsche continues to prove there is real demand for three-pedal performance with special 911 models. In that context, a manual McLaren no longer feels impossible, especially if it is built as a limited-run MSO project for collectors and brand loyalists.

What remains unclear is whether the rumored McLaren would use a true mechanical manual gearbox or a simulated setup similar in spirit to Ferrari’s latest approach. Enthusiast discussion on McLaren Life and German Car Forum has also pointed to the possibility of a naturally aspirated engine, although a twin-turbocharged powertrain would likely be the more realistic path for a road-legal model. McLaren has shown with the Solus GT that it is willing to build something extreme and unexpected, but emissions rules and road-car development realities would make a naturally aspirated V10 or similar setup far more complicated.

The rumored reveal target is The Quail during Monterey Car Week in August, which would be the right stage for something this rare and high-profile. Until McLaren makes an official announcement, the P50 remains firmly in rumor territory. Still, the possibility of a modern manual McLaren is fascinating because it would speak directly to collectors who miss the raw connection of the F1 era. If it happens, it may not be cheap, common, or easy to get, but it could become one of the most talked-about McLarens in years.
