Hummer, and its unmistakably rugged image, is famous around the world, yet the badge/brand itself is only 25 years old – and actually dormant for a lot of that time. Even so, a quarter-century is a milestone worth celebrating for a brand built on big, bold, and unapologetically brash machines, and today’s Hummer custodian, GMC, is marking the occasion.
The celebration comes in the form of the 2027 GMC Hummer EV Icon | 25, a special edition coming in both pickup and SUV body styles, and due on sale next year.
A Nod To Hummer’s Past

As the name suggests, the special edition is based on today’s GMC Hummer EV Pickup and GMC Hummer EV SUV. Longtime Hummer fans will immediately recognize its signature Icon paint, a modern interpretation of the bold yellow finish that became synonymous with the original H2, the vehicle that launched Hummer as a standalone brand.
Wondering about the H1? While Hummer first appeared on AM General’s civilian Humvee in the early 1990s as a model name, it didn’t officially become a General Motors brand until the H2 arrived in 2002. GM acquired the rights to the Hummer name in 1999, later renaming the original civilian Humvee the H1 and establishing Hummer as the brand that would go on to spawn the H2, H3, and today’s electric Hummer EV.
Hummer
Interestingly, even though Hummer today serves as a sub-brand of GMC, it’s a move that actually brings the brand full circle. When GM first acquired the rights to the Hummer name, the original plan was to sell Hummer-branded models through GMC dealers. However, the automaker ultimately kept the two brands distinct until the launch of the current Hummer EV.
Unique Touches Extend Beyond Special Paint Job

The GMC Hummer EV Icon | 25 also features a unique black front skid plate, unique drive mode graphics for the infotainment system, and serialized badging on the dash. A photo of the badge suggests production will be limited to 250 units, though it’s unclear whether that figure applies to the pickup and SUV individually or combined.
GMC also said the Icon yellow paint will be available across the 2027 Hummer EV lineup, alongside four additional new colors: Dark Ridge, Azurite Blue, Dark Ember, and Deep Void Matte. The lineup also gains two new 22-inch wheel designs. Another key change for 2027 is the addition of a native NACS charge port, eliminating the need for an adapter when using NACS chargers, including Tesla’s Supercharger network.
Close
GMC will release more details, including pricing, closer to next year’s market launch. The automaker has confirmed buyers will be able to order the Icon | 25 with either the Hummer EV 2X or 3X grade. The Hummer EV 2X currently starts at $97,200 for the 2026 model year, regardless of body style, but we suspect a small premium will be required for the special edition.
GMC will officially unveil the Hummer EV Icon | 25 later today at the 2026 ESPY Awards in New York City. The annual event raises awareness and funds for the V Foundation for Cancer Research, and the special edition’s debut coincides with GMC’s return as the ESPYs’ official vehicle sponsor.
CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:
The GMC Hummer EV has changed little since it arrived for the 2022 model year, so the Icon | 25 arrives at just the right time. Its impactful color, exclusive styling touches, and a nod to the brand’s history should give GMC’s electric off-roader a welcome shot of personality while keeping Hummer’s larger-than-life image firmly in the spotlight.
