- Nio’s retail sales jumped 62.6% year-on-year in June, ranking 8th in China’s NEV market.
- In the overall passenger vehicle market, BYD led in retail sales with a 14.0% share in June, while Tesla ranked ninth.
BYD (HKEX: 1211) remained the largest new energy vehicle (NEV) maker in China in June, while Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) held onto 5th place for a second consecutive month.
BYD’s retail sales of passenger NEVs in China came to 224,478 units in June, down 36.2% year-on-year but up 8.2% from the previous month, according to rankings released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) on Thursday.
The company ranked first with a 22.3% share, up from 21.8% in May, maintaining a significant lead over second-place Geely Auto (HKEX: 0175).
Geely’s NEV retail sales came to 107,951 units in June, down 6.0% year-on-year and down 1.1% from the previous month. It ranked second in China’s NEV market with a 10.7% share.
Tesla’s retail sales in China came to 52,920 units in June, down 13.9% year-on-year but up 11.9% from the previous month. The US electric vehicle (EV) maker continued to rank 5th with a 5.3% share.
Nio Inc (NYSE: NIO) ranked 8th with retail sales of 40,525 units in June, accounting for a 4.0% share. That sales figure surged 62.6% year-on-year and rose 7.7% from May.
According to data previously released by the company, Nio Inc delivered 40,597 vehicles in June, a monthly record for the year so far. By brand, the main Nio brand delivered 21,908 units, Onvo delivered 11,743 units, and Firefly delivered 6,946 units.
Xiaomi EV, a unit of Xiaomi (HKEX: 1810), ranked 10th with retail sales of 34,738 units in June, up 36.4% year-on-year and up 6.0% from the previous month. It was the third consecutive month it topped 30,000 units.
Its YU7 sport utility vehicle (SUV) delivered 14,324 units in June, a jump of 63.97% from the previous month, ending five straight months of month-on-month declines. This may have been driven by the new base version of the YU7, launched in late May with a starting price of 233,500 yuan ($34,440).
By contrast, the SU7 sedan remained under pressure. The model delivered 20,414 units in June, down 12.10% year-on-year, marking the 9th consecutive month of year-on-year declines.
Li Auto (NASDAQ: LI) failed to make the top 10 NEV retail list in June. The company delivered 30,895 units in June, down 14.84% year-on-year, marking the second consecutive month of year-on-year declines.
Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV) was likewise absent from the domestic retail top 10 list in June.
The company previously said it delivered 40,126 units in June, its highest monthly level so far in 2026, ending five straight months of year-on-year declines. The rebound relied mainly on the ramp-up of new models such as the premium flagship GX SUV.
That delivery figure included 32,593 units of domestic retail sales and a record 7,533 units of overseas sales, according to CPCA data.
For January-June, BYD’s NEV retail sales came to 990,879 units, down 38.5% year-on-year, ranking first with a 21.1% share.

Tesla’s retail sales in China came to 238,955 units for January-June, down 9.3% year-on-year, ranking sixth with a 5.1% share.
Li Auto ranked eighth for January-June with retail sales of 193,472 units and a 4.1% share.
Nio ranked ninth with 190,648 units and a 4.1% share. Xiaomi EV ranked 10th with 185,055 units and a 3.9% share.
In the overall passenger vehicle market, which includes traditional internal combustion engine cars, BYD ranked 1st in retail sales with a 14.0% share in June.
