Nio Inc (NYSE: NIO) has topped 150,000 cumulative new vehicle deliveries in Shanghai, underscoring the Chinese EV (electric vehicle) maker’s strong market performance in the city where it was born.
The milestone was reached on Wednesday, according to an official statement from the company.
At the Nanxiang delivery center in Shanghai, users of the company’s three brands — Nio, Onvo and Firefly — completed a group delivery, marking the formal achievement of the milestone.
Nio was founded in Shanghai in 2014. In 2018, its Founder’s Edition ES8 began deliveries in the city.
As of the end of June, Nio Inc had delivered a cumulative total of about 1.189 million vehicles across China, with Shanghai accounting for more than one-tenth of that figure.
From January to May 2026, Nio Inc ranked first in Shanghai’s overall passenger vehicle market with retail sales of 16,582 units — regardless of energy type, body style or price range, according to the statement.
Strong demand for its flagship models has been a key pillar of Nio’s performance in Shanghai.
The ES9 SUV (sport utility vehicle) went on sale on May 27, with a starting price of 498,000 yuan ($73,229) for a full purchase including the battery pack. If consumers opt for the BaaS (battery as a service) battery rental plan, the starting price can drop to 390,000 yuan.
The model surpassed 10,000 deliveries nationwide within 30 days of its launch, setting a new record for the fastest deliveries of a premium all-electric model in the 500,000-yuan class in the Chinese market.
On July 5, ES9 deliveries in Shanghai topped 1,000 units, making Shanghai the first city in China to reach that level.
The ES8 has been the sales champion in Shanghai’s large-SUV market and among models priced above 400,000 yuan for seven consecutive months, according to the statement.
From January to May 2026, Nio Inc held a market share of more than 60% in Shanghai’s large-SUV segment, the company said.
Cumulative deliveries of the ES6 and EC6 series in Shanghai have surpassed 60,000 units, while the ET5 and ET5 Touring series are approaching 30,000 units.
Firefly, the small premium brand, claimed the top spot in Shanghai’s compact-car market from January to May 2026, regardless of price range or energy type, Nio said.
Nationwide, Nio Inc delivered 40,597 vehicles in June, a monthly high for the year and up 62.9% from a year earlier.
In the first half of this year, the company delivered a cumulative 191,123 vehicles, up 67.4% year-on-year.
Shanghai is also an important R&D base for Nio. The company’s new battery R&D base project in Shanghai’s Jiading district is scheduled to break ground in the second half of this year.
The project will further solidify Nio’s dual-platform structure of “manufacturing in Anhui plus R&D in Shanghai,” and upon completion will house 31 lithium battery testing laboratories.
The Nio brand’s average transaction price reached 443,000 yuan ($65,300) in June, as deliveries of the ES9, which starts at 498,000 yuan, ramped up.
