Toyota is giving the 2027 Crown a light but meaningful update, keeping its unusual sedan-meets-crossover formula while adding a new hybrid system to most of the lineup. The Crown has always occupied a curious space since it replaced the Avalon in the U.S., with a raised ride height, sloped roofline, standard all-wheel drive, and a more premium feel than Toyota’s typical sedans. For 2027, Toyota is not reinventing the Crown, but it is sharpening the package with updated technology, new styling details, and a revised hybrid setup.
The biggest change is under the skin. XLE, Limited, and Nightshade trims now receive Toyota’s fifth-generation hybrid system, which still pairs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with electric motors and all-wheel drive. Toyota has not released full output details yet, but the system is rated at 40 mpg combined. That is technically 1 mpg lower than the outgoing version, but Toyota says the updated setup is designed to deliver a more responsive and refined driving experience. Paddle shifters are also now included on those trims, giving the Crown a slightly more engaging feel from behind the wheel.
The top Platinum trim continues with the stronger Hybrid MAX powertrain, which combines a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with two electric motors and a six-speed automatic transmission. Output remains 340 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque, keeping the Platinum as the performance choice in the Crown lineup. It also gets standard red brake calipers and black window surrounds for 2027, while its available two-tone exterior treatment becomes a bit more subtle with the trunk now painted to match the body color.
Visually, the Crown changes only slightly. Toyota revised the rear bumper, added a new black exterior color called Inked, and gave the hybrid all-wheel-drive badging a satin finish. Inside, the Limited trim can now be ordered with Saddle Tan seats, while the Platinum can extend that same color throughout more of the cabin. The Crown still leans into a premium commuter vibe rather than a traditional sport sedan role, which is exactly what makes it such an odd but interesting part of Toyota’s lineup.
Pricing sees only a modest increase on most trims, but one version stands out. The 2027 Crown XLE starts at $42,755, just $200 more than before, while the Nightshade comes in at $50,260 and the Platinum starts at $56,485. The Limited, however, jumps by $3,770 to $51,015, making it more expensive than the Nightshade. Toyota has not announced an exact arrival date yet, but the 2027 Crown is expected to reach dealerships in the coming months. For buyers who miss the comfort of a large Toyota sedan but want standard hybrid efficiency and all-wheel drive, the Crown remains one of the more distinctive choices on the market.
