Ram is simplifying its V8 story for the 2027 1500, and plenty of traditional truck buyers may see that as good news. According to Motor1, Ram will begin phasing out the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 eTorque setup early in the 2027 model year, replacing it with a nonhybridized version of the familiar HEMI. A limited number of 2027 Ram 1500 trucks will still be built with the eTorque powertrain during the transition, but the direction is clear: the V8 is staying, while the mild-hybrid assist is heading out.
The eTorque system has been part of the Ram 1500’s HEMI formula since 2019, using a 48-volt battery and motor-generator in place of a traditional alternator. It helped provide smoother restarts, extra launch torque, and improved efficiency without completely changing the personality of the truck. Still, for many Ram fans, the appeal of the HEMI has always been about simplicity, sound, torque, and familiarity, not added electrification.
The other major change is the removal of automatic stop-start technology from most nonhybrid V8 models. Stop-start systems shut the engine off when the vehicle is stopped, such as at a light or in traffic, then restart it when the driver lifts off the brake. The feature was intended to reduce fuel use and emissions during idling, but it has never exactly been beloved by many American drivers. In trucks especially, where owners often value smoothness, durability, and immediate response, stop-start can feel like a feature people tolerate rather than one they enjoy.
The timing is interesting because federal policy has shifted around the credits automakers previously received for installing stop-start systems. Ram and other brands once had more incentive to include the feature, even if customers were not always asking for it. With those credits no longer carrying the same weight, Ram appears ready to prioritize customer preference and powertrain simplicity, at least in its V8 half-ton trucks.
This change also follows Ram’s quick reversal on the HEMI itself. After briefly retiring the V8 from the half-ton lineup, Ram brought it back due to strong customer demand, proving that truck buyers still care deeply about engine choice. Now, by moving away from the eTorque version and phasing in a more traditional nonhybrid HEMI, Ram is leaning even harder into what many of its loyalists wanted in the first place. For shoppers who still prefer a classic V8 pickup experience, the 2027 Ram 1500 looks like it is getting a little more old-school in all the right ways.
