Hyundai has provided a first look at its redesigned fourth-generation Tucson, which is expected to go on sale late this year or early next and could really light up showrooms when it arrives. The current Tucson is already handsome, but the new generation of the popular compact crossover dials things up to 11 with a blocky, almost sculpted appearance that’s both rugged and futuristic while also looking like it would be right at home on a premium vehicle.
A More Premium Tucson

Hyundai’s latest Santa Fe and Palisade, introduced for 2024 and 2026 respectively, already set the tone with their boxy design, which Hyundai design chief SangYup Lee says is meant to strengthen the vehicles’ outdoor-lifestyle appeal. As a more urban-oriented vehicle, the Tucson takes on the same blocky theme while adding a more architectural flavor through Hyundai’s Art of Steel design language. That includes pronounced horizontal elements front and rear and bluff fender flares that make the Lamborghini Urus look conservative and rivals such as the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V downright pedestrian in comparison.
The lighting is particularly striking, with a slim front light bar for the daytime running lights and a matching rear light bar that makes the Tucson look more space-age than its predecessor. These work with large wheels and a heavily sculpted rear bumper to give it a more planted stance. It looks futuristic without going overboard, with Hyundai making the Tucson appear both rugged and sophisticated – a combination that should help it stand out in a crowded segment.

The interior follows the same premium direction and closely matches what Hyundai plans for its redesigned eighth-generation Elantra, which is also due in showrooms shortly. A large central touchscreen likely running Hyundai’s new Pleos infotainment system sits alongside a slim digital instrument display, while the horizontal layout, soft-looking materials, ambient lighting, and light-colored upholstery shown here give the cabin an upscale feel. It looks less like a mainstream compact crossover and more like something from a class above.
Hyundai Quiet On Powertrains

Hyundai is short on details. In fact, there are none; this was a purely visual reveal. But what we know is that the Tucson is among Hyundai’s best-selling vehicles globally, and in the US it leads the charts by a significant margin. Hyundai moved 234,000 units last year, with the runner-up Elantra 86,000 units behind. That means Hyundai is less likely to rock the boat with the mechanicals, given the major changes already seen to the exterior and cabin.
In other words, expect the new Tucson to still ride on a front-wheel-drive platform while offering the option of all-wheel drive. The current Tucson’s gas, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid powertrains should also carry over, perhaps with tweaks to improve power and efficiency. That would mean a standard 2.5-liter inline-four, a hybrid option combining a turbocharged 1.6-liter inline-four with an electric motor, and a PHEV option combining the same 1.6-liter turbo with a more powerful electric motor and bigger battery.
Model Lineup May Be Expanded

Hyundai has shown that a repeat of the slightly more rugged Tucson XRT is planned. What the automaker hasn’t confirmed is whether a sportier N Line or N version will be introduced, though at least one is rumored. The US previously got a Tucson N Line, but the model, which looked sportier but didn’t pack any extra horsepower, was dropped for 2026.
Hyundai CEO José Muñoz has also said that the automaker will launch its first extended-range EVs next year, but it’s not clear if the new Tucson will be one of the first recipients of that technology.
CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters

Standing out in the highly competitive compact SUV segment is more important than ever, but Hyundai can’t afford to alienate the buyers who made the Tucson one of its biggest sellers. The automaker looks to be striking the right balance with the new Tucson, bringing a bolder design without straying too far from what made the current model successful. Add the available hybrid powertrains to the mix, and Hyundai appears to be on a good trajectory with its new compact crossover.
