The Daily Brief wraps up the biggest stories and our exclusive reporting on the auto industry and car culture.

The 2026 Jeep Wrangler got one small change that yields a big fun-factor upgrade—you don’t need tools to remove its doors anymore. We’ve known that for a while. But this week, I finally got to try Jeep’s new quick-release door removal system myself and can report back on exactly how it changes the user experience (it’s great).

Removable doors, roof, and a retractable windshield have been Jeep hallmarks that date back to the brand’s WWII origin story. One of my grandfather’s favorite army stories involves “requisitioning” the doors from his buddy’s motorpool rig in occupied Germany … but that’s one to tell over beers rather than in a blog post.

As a big fan of convertibles and off-roading, I’ve always loved this about Jeeps, and I take them apart myself pretty much every chance I get. The exterior panels on all pre-2007 models come off pretty easily. The process got a little more annoying when the last-gen (JK) Wrangler came out—I took the roof, doors, and windshield off a JK two-door years ago, and if I recall correctly, the whole process took almost two hours.

The Sahara is kind of a weird spec—Wrangler plus road tires? But it’s a perfect beach-town cruiser. Andrew P. Collins

The current-gen (JL) got a little more user-friendly when it came out in 2018. You still needed some specific tools to remove the doors, but the bolt heads became easier to access and remove without scratching the vehicle’s paint. The windshield is a little cumbersome to remove, and it looks even sillier in the “down” position than it did on the JK. But it does go down. (Though even I, a big lover of wind, have to concede that windshield-down driving is pretty uncomfortable and un-fun.)

What is really fun, however, is driving around in a Jeep with its roof on and doors off. And last week, when I kind of accidentally ended up with a rental 2026 Wrangler Sahara, I did a lot of that.

I convinced my wife and baby sister to Uber me around without the doors. While the roof kept the sun off us, the open door portals let us soak up all the sea breeze. Andrew P. Collins

Previously, you needed to remove some Torx bolts to get the Wrangler’s doors off. For 2026, you simply open the door, flip a retaining clip and pull a pin upward, unclip the power window and speaker wiring harness (super easy), and lift the door straight up.

It’s barely harder to take the whole door off than it is to roll the window down. In fact, I bought a tarp to throw on top of this rented Wrangler while I was parked (I’d planned to leave the doors off for the entirety of the time I had it). But after two changeovers, I realized it was actually easier to simply reinstall the doors than it was to mess with the tarp. New cars may be losing a lot of mechanical user-friendliness in favor of all-digital everything, but this door pin update for the 2026 Wrangler is a really nice win for those of us who like to feel things working.

The only thing missing is side mirrors—but fitting aftermarket ones is trivially cheap and easy. Or, if you’re off-road or in a state that only requires one, you can skip them.

    Andrew P. Collins

I know some commenters are going to say removing Wrangler doors was already easy, and they’re not wrong—but I also think making the door-pulling process totally toolless is going to open up the experience to a lot more people (no pun intended). Sometimes the little OEM Jeep tool bag goes missing. Or folks are intimidated by the idea of dismantling their vehicles, even if the process is factory-approved. Having the doors be removable without tools makes the whole thing feel more intentional, and can make any owner (or renter) more inclined to pop them off for quick jaunts on a whim rather than hunting for a Torx bit or worrying about scratching the paint.

As to why driving doorless is so delightful, well, it has practical benefits in extreme off-road scenarios, but I just enjoy it for the vibes. So many modern cars feel like tanks, cocooning you from the world. A doorless Jeep invites (forces) fresh air into the cabin and, with it, a huge dose of those Jimmy Buffett-y vibes you bought a Wrangler for in the first place.

So here’s to Jeep for making a great practical upgrade on the 2026 Wrangler. And if you’re driving a Wrangler from any year, here’s your sign to take a little trip without your doors.
