Iconic gummy candy brand HARIBO and its transport partners at Recht Logistik are turning to electric semi trucks to deliver emissions-free shipping across several of its European operations.

Part of a larger sustainability initiative from the German candy giant, the deployment of new, battery electric Mercedes-Benz semi trucks aims to gradually reduce transport-related emissions between the company’s locations in Grafschaft, Neuss, and Eindhoven, Germany – established routes that, according to HARIBO, are ideally suited for electric transport.

“The further development of our transport solutions is an important building block in achieving our sustainability goals,” explains Stefan Sorce, Managing Director of HARIBO Logistics, who added that HARIBO continuously collaborates with experienced partners to explore how its logistics emissions can be measurably reduced.

The up to 600 km of range (~370 miles) per charge offered by the Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 trucks shown (but not named) in the press photo enable reliable daily deliveries between the HARIBO locations, while 400 kW DC fast charging ensures they can get back up to speed quickly if there’s a need for additional runs.

HARIBO says it expects its newly electrified delivery routes to reduce harmful carbon dioxide emissions by up to 37 kg per 100 km compared to a conventional diesel truck, which pencils out to a daily CO2 saving of about 171 kg for two cycles, or well over 40 metric tons of CO2 emissions per 250-day working year.

    Electrek’s Take

In addition to slashing air pollution, there’s no question that electrifying trucks can deliver significant fuel savings, attract new operators, and generally make life better for everyone. It shouldn’t surprise anyone that HARIBO, a company known for making people happy, has made this move.

    Here’s hoping many more follow.
