Here it is, the 2027 BMW M2 xDrive. Yes, all-wheel-drive has finally come to M’s mini monster, one of the last bastions of traditional BMW performance. Of course, it’s not such a surprise if you’ve been keeping an eye on the model. Not only has all-wheel-drive proliferated across BMW’s range of normal and performance cars, the automaker accidentally gave away the reveal a few months ago. STill, since this is the first time the M2 has received all-wheel-drive, it’s a big deal, and its one that even improves performance.

BMW only added all-wheel-drive to the M2 xDrive, choosing not to add any extra power. Still, it gets the higher-output version of the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six since it has the eight-speed automatic as its only transmission option. The added traction does let the xDrive get off the line more quickly.

    Top Speed

    155 mph (177 w/ M Driver’s Package)

The 473 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque get it from 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds, which BMW says is 0.3 second quicker than the rear-drive automatic version, and 0.5 second quicker than the less torque-y manual model. It even shaves a tenth off the M2 CS’s time, which had more than 500 horsepower at its disposal. With rollout, BMW claims a time of 3.3 seconds for the xDrive. Top speed, as standard, is 155 mph, and the M Driver’s Package bumps that to 177 mph.

The all-wheel-drive system works similar to the version in the M4. It has a multi-plate clutch in the transfer case that can engage the front wheels as needed. Otherwise, the M2 xDrive operates in rear-drive mode, and it can be locked into a rear-drive-only mode as desired. The extra traction does come with a weight penalty. At 3,988 pounds, the xDrive weighs 121 pounds more than the rear-drive, automatic M2, and 174 pounds more than the manual M2.

The rest of the M2 xDrive’s equipment is familiar. It has the same adaptive suspension, as well as the same ventilated brakes with six-piston front calipers. Even the wheel and tire specifications are the same as before with 275-mm wide front tires and 285-mm wide rear tires.

BMW’s lineup of manual-equipped cars whittles down to three – all of them pricey M cars.

    More Traction Means More Money

The M2 xDrive’s extra equipment adds extra cost. The starting MSRP is $73,600, which comes to $73,735 with the $1,350 destination charge. Pricing for all 2027 M2s hasn’t been announced, but the 2026 model with a manual starts at $69,000, or $70,350 with the same $1,350 destination charge. If the added traction and acceleration performance are up your alley and in your budget, you’ll be able to pick one up soon. Production starts at BMW’s plant in Mexico in August, with deliveries coming soon after.

CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:

While BMW still offers rear-drive versions of the M2, M3, and M4, it seems like those days could be numbered. BMW adding an all-wheel-drive variant to the M2 shows that customers really want the drivetrain for both greater performance and all-weather usability. Many of BMW’s higher-output M models are only available with all-wheel drive. Also, with rear-drive modes available, that driving character isn’t necessarily lost. It will also be interesting to see if BMW offers some ultra-high-performance versions of the M2 in the near future or in a new generation, now that it can provide traction to match
